Raminho: Cliffs, Church and Culture on Terceira
Accommodation in Raminho
Raminho on Terceira brings together a distinctive coastal landscape, a clearly dated local history and several different viewpoints. The cliffs, church and annual festival tradition, as well as the walking trails described around Raminho, offer concrete starting points for planning your trip. You can choose what to see based on the landscape and cultural themes that interest you most.
Coast and volcanic landscape
The coast of Raminho forms a continuous, almost straight stretch of high cliffs measuring about 5.7 kilometres. This approximate length describes the coastline, not a walking route. Raminho also occupies the northern slope of the Caldeira de Santa Bárbara in the Santa Bárbara volcanic complex. The higher part of the village lies within the Serra de Santa Bárbara e Pico Alto Natura 2000 site, designated as a Site of Community Importance. The landscape description thus brings together the coastline and the higher-lying slope.
Church, festival and local history
The Igreja de São Francisco Xavier do Raminho is a spacious, three-aisled church in the neo-Romanesque style, with two bell towers. Two dates offer a specific insight into its history: the foundation stone was laid on 16 August 1855, and the first service was held on 26 October 1861. Both the start of construction and the first service are therefore documented in the church's history.
Raminho's most important religious festival is held annually on the last Sunday in August in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, the last Sunday in August is the date to note. Another dated reference in the village's history is the Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Raminho: it was moved from Teatro do Meio to the square on 3 February 1880.
Viewpoints and trails
A fixed stone windmill on Pico do Tio Delfina in Raminho stands at an elevated location and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The unobstructed view extends particularly far across much of Terceira's north coast to the ocean horizon. The mill, its elevation and the view are all closely associated with a named location: Pico do Tio Delfina.
The Grande Rota do Oeste (GR01 TER) crosses the western half of Terceira on a linear route of about 31.2 kilometres. It runs from the Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Lagoa das Patas to the Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Mata da Serreta. The description of the second stage highlights its own landscape and trail features: it passes a picnic area with a whale-watching station and then reaches the Miradouro do Raminho. On this stage, the trail runs along steep cliffs and through areas where Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) nest.
A side road leads from the Miradouro do Raminho to a former Vigia da Baleia, a former whale-watching lookout. This is a separate point of interest from the whale-watching station on the second stage of the Grande Rota do Oeste. In neighbouring Serreta, the Serreta PRC3TER walking trail offers a view of Raminho from the summit of a volcanic cone.
Library and video library
The Biblioteca Álamo Oliveira holds about 7,000 books donated by the writer and poet José Henrique Álamo Oliveira. The library also includes a video library. Visitors can watch video recordings on site in its equipped rooms. Alongside its churches and landscapes, Raminho thus offers a named book collection and audiovisual resources as cultural attractions.
