Porto Judeu offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: Gruta das Agulhas, formed by volcanic lava; a dive site near the fishing harbour; and Impérios with their own architectural histories. If you are looking for a hotel in Porto Judeu, these themes can help you organise your interests. Would you rather explore underwater activities, religious architecture or geological formations? The following places offer different points of interest and give you specific ideas for planning.

Coast and dive site

Gruta das Agulhas was formed by lava from the eruption of Pico do Refugo, which flowed as far as the sea. Arcadas do Porto Judeu is a dive site in a small bay near the fishing harbour of Porto Judeu, opposite the Ilhéus das Cabras. There is also a long arch at Arcadas, about 7 m wide. The coast therefore features two distinct natural landmarks: Gruta, formed by lava flowing to the sea, and the striking arch at the dive site.

Arcadas is in a sheltered location, with shallow water and weak currents. The dive site is suitable for night dives, underwater photography, introductory dives and snorkelling. These activities offer different options, from introductory dives and snorkelling to underwater photography and night dives. If you are interested in the coast, this range of activities offers specific ideas for planning your trip.

Impérios and architectural history

The Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Porto Judeu de Baixo, also known as Império do Terreiro, was built in 1916. Its façade stands out for its bright, bold colours, inspired by the traditional colours of the parish’s fishing boats. Its architectural history therefore includes both its construction date and a design connection to the fishing tradition.

The Império do Divino Espírito Santo da Ribeira do Testo, also known as Império da Boca da Ribeira, was built in Porto Judeu in 1933. The building was restored in 2000. Its festivals in honour of the Holy Spirit are celebrated on the Sundays of Pentecost and Trinity. If you are particularly interested in the festival tradition, these two Sundays can serve as a guide to timing; check specific event dates before your trip. The construction dates and restoration also help distinguish the historical details of the two Impérios.

Algar do Carvão and natural formations

Algar do Carvão is a volcanic chimney 100 m deep. Rainwater seeping into the rock feeds a clear lake inside; silica stalactites and stalagmites also form there. This natural monument is classified as a natural monument by Parque Natural da Terceira and is also a geosite of Geoparque dos Açores. In comparison with Gruta das Agulhas, the features described are also distinct: Gruta is associated with lava from the eruption of Pico do Refugo, while Algar do Carvão is characterised by its volcanic chimney, lake and silica formations.

Access to Algar do Carvão is restricted. Observe this access restriction and check the current visitor conditions before visiting. On Terceira, a walking route also connects the natural monuments of Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre. It thus links two natural monuments along a route specifically described as a walking route.
