Discover Agualva: Coastal Trail, Nature and Mill Heritage
Accommodation in Agualva
Agualva can be explored through several specific themes: the Baías da Agualva coastal trail, Mata das Frechas, Ribeira da Agualva and the area’s mill heritage. These places and historical connections offer different focuses for planning a trip—from a linear coastal trail to traces of the former watermill trade. When looking for a hotel in Agualva, this distinction can help you put your personal travel interests first.
Coastal Trail and Geology
The linear Baías da Agualva coastal trail runs between Agualva and Quatro Ribeiras. Most of it lies within a protected area designated for habitat or species conservation in the Terceira Natural Park. The trail starts at Canada da Alagoa, next to a car park; from there, it descends towards the Alagoa da Fajãzinha geosite. The geosite lies along the trail and is also known as Fajã da Alagoa. Alagoa da Fajãzinha is an old bay that was filled in by sediment from a watercourse flowing into it. Along the coast, it is bordered by a pebble beach. For travellers interested in how the coastal landscape formed, the trail combines a specific route with a point of geological interest.
Forest, Waterways and Activities
Mata das Frechas offers another way to experience nature. It was restored in 2019: eucalyptus and acacia trees were removed to make way for the planting of endemic species of high ecological value. These include sanguinho (Frangula azorica), ginjeira do mato (Prunus azorica), uva-da-serra (Vaccinium cylindraceum), cedro-do-mato (Juniperus brevifolius), urze (Erica azorica) and pau branco (Picconia azorica).
Ribeira da Agualva offers a different perspective on nature. It is one of the few watercourses on Terceira that flows all year round and is used for walking and trekking. Along the river, waterfalls form small freshwater pools that are used for swimming. Before swimming, check the water conditions and safety at the site. Both activity along the river and its pools are among the features associated with Ribeira da Agualva.
Local History and Mill Heritage
Agualva was probably established as a parish around 1588. The first church was built in a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. Watermills also shape the area’s history: by the mid-20th century, around 50 watermills had been established along Ribeira da Agualva. This figure gives an indication of the scale of the former milling activity along the river; surviving evidence points to individual structural remains.
Near Parque das Frechas are surviving traces of milling activity, including “pulos”, water channels and the ruins of a watermill with a channel and basin. Agualva’s mill heritage also includes a fully restored, working watermill.
Facilities at Parque das Frechas
Parque das Frechas has toilets, a drinking fountain, a small lake, two car parks, tables, barbecue areas, an oven and a bandstand. As facilities can change over time, it is advisable to check their condition before your visit.
