Porto Martins combines a distinctive coastal focus with several themes of cultural history. On the east coast of Terceira Island lies the Zona Balnear de Porto Martins, with several natural swimming pools. Its religious history includes the Igreja de Santa Margarida and the tradition of the coronations of the Holy Spirit; its military history can be seen in the forts of Forte de São Filipe and Forte de São Bento. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Porto Martins, these different points of interest may shape your decision: the coast as a place to swim, and religious traditions and architectural landmarks as cultural interests.

Coast and natural swimming pools

The Zona Balnear de Porto Martins on Terceira’s east coast consists of several natural swimming pools. In summer, the average water temperature is 21 °C. This average is a seasonal guide; the temperature on a particular travel date may differ. This gives you a sense of the coastal setting in terms of bathing spots and warm summer water.

Church and Espírito Santo tradition

The Igreja de Santa Margarida originated as a chapel built between 1500 and 1550 by Antónia dos Anjos Macedo. The Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Largo Comendador Pamplona was built in 1902. The tradition of the coronations of the Holy Spirit has a different time frame: the Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo do Porto Martins holds them annually, but dates and arrangements may vary. The dates provide two different points of reference: a period for the church’s origins and a single year for the construction of the Império. If you would like to plan your trip around a coronation, check the specific dates and arrangements in advance. The name “Espírito Santo” means “Holy Spirit” in English.

Fortifications and the Tourilho

Forte de São Filipe, also known as São Tiago, helped defend the bay of Porto de Martim together with other fortifications. Forte de São Bento had a triangular ground plan. The historical emphasis therefore differs: São Filipe is associated primarily with the joint defense of the bay, while São Bento is distinguished by the geometry of its structure. A ground plan describes its shape as seen from above.

At the entrance to Largo Comendador Pamplona is the Tourilho, a long, rectangular, walled enclosure with a single entrance. During festivities, it served as a pen for fighting bulls. The Tourilho adds a practical connection to festive events alongside the religious buildings and fortifications.

If a festival is to determine your travel dates, factor the changing dates and arrangements into your plans.
