Accommodation in Angra Do Heroísmo
Angra Do Heroísmo combines maritime history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with historic buildings, green spaces and bathing areas. The city’s landmarks offer different ways to explore them.
City history and architecture
Angra Do Heroísmo served as an Atlantic stop on the Carreira das Índias. In 1983, UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site. Its layout is also part of its historic character: Angra is considered a planned city and features an orthogonal street grid. This urban design offers a distinct way to explore the history of the place, alongside its individual buildings and collections.
Construction of the Fortaleza de São João Baptista began around 1592, and it encompasses the entire Monte Brasil. Its history is thus closely connected with a prominent feature of the city’s landscape. The Museu de Angra do Heroísmo was founded in 1949 and has been housed in the former Convento de São Francisco since 1969. Several exhibitions focus on the history and culture of the Azores.
Religious buildings also reveal different historical layers. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição features Renaissance architecture and was rebuilt around 1553 over an older chapel of the same name. The Igreja da Misericórdia was built in the 18th century on the former site of two demolished houses. Both building histories offer tangible points of reference if you want to learn about Angra through its architecture and development.
The Palácio dos Capitães Generais has a museum tour. Check the access arrangements before visiting. This lets you plan this stop without assuming that access is currently guaranteed.
Gardens, viewpoints and coast
The Jardim Duque da Terceira is a green space established in 1882 in the heart of the World Heritage city. An upper section has a viewpoint overlooking Angra Do Heroísmo. Monte Brasil has picnic areas and several viewpoints. From the Miradouro do Pico das Cruzinhas, the view extends over the city and the island’s southern coast. The garden and Monte Brasil therefore offer different viewpoints, while the picnic areas mentioned are on Monte Brasil.
The Zona Balnear da Prainha lies within Baía de Angra and is part of the historic centre. It is the municipality’s only sandy bathing area; its described features include calm seas and a gently sloping seabed. By contrast, the Zona Balnear da Silveira makes use of the pier and ramp of a former fishing and maritime transport harbour. Steps or a ramp lead down to the sea there. The two bathing areas thus differ both in their coastal features and in the stated ways of accessing the sea.
Events and getting around
The Sanjoaninas take place in the city every year. You can check the specific dates and programme for the year of your visit. This keeps the event’s annual recurrence distinct from the dates of your own trip.
The Central Rodoviária de Angra do Heroísmo connects local and intercity transport with parking and taxis. An urban route through the historic centre is listed for a minibus operated by the city council. The city’s information about it was last updated on 21 May 2021; check current service and route details before travelling.
When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus more on Angra’s history, its viewpoints or its bathing areas, and choose hotels accordingly.
