Cieszyna lies on the left bank of the Wisłok; the Stępinka stream also flows through the village. Activities described here include a red cycling route, two hiking trails, and fishing in the Stępinka valley. Another focus is the Stępina-Cieszyna railway tunnel bunker and its history during the Second World War. Landscape, outdoor activities, and historical topics are therefore central to planning your trip. The following sections describe the trails by their routes and distinguish between the historical references.

Cycling and Hiking in Cieszyna

The red cycling route passes through Cieszyna and forms a loop that runs, among other places, through Frysztak and Stępina. The section from the junction in Cieszyna to the center of Frysztak is about 22 kilometers long. The 22 kilometers refer to this section, not the entire loop. The red cycling route is listed as taking about four hours; this time applies to the route, while the distance refers to the section. Your personal pace affects the actual travel time.

The two walking trails differ in their routes. The blue Dębica–Wiśniowa–Czarnorzeki trail climbs to the ridge between Pstrągówka and Cieszyna. The green Frysztak–Bardo trail follows the Cieszyna–Brzostek road and runs alongside the Stępinka stream. The ridge section and the route beside the road and stream thus offer different landscape features. When comparing the trails, you can use these specific features as a guide.

The Stępinka and Fishing

The Stępinka is more than a feature of the landscape and the green hiking trail. You can catch trout or crayfish in its valley. Check local rules and conditions before fishing. The stream is therefore relevant both for finding your way along the trail and for a specific activity in the valley.

Historical References in Cieszyna

One historical reference concerns the founding of the town of Wisłoka. Cieszyna is mentioned in a document issued by Casimir the Great in Nowy Sącz concerning this founding. At that time, Cieszyna was owned by the Cistercians.

The Stępina-Cieszyna railway tunnel bunker was part of Anlage Süd, Hitler’s military headquarters complex during the Second World War. The tunnel is 393 meters long. In 1941, Hitler’s train stopped in the tunnel. The length describes the structure’s dimensions; the train’s stop anchors the history in a specific event. At the same time, the connection to Anlage Süd places the tunnel in a broader military context.

The two historical topics offer different perspectives: Cieszyna appears in a founding document and was owned by the Cistercians at the time; the tunnel bunker is associated with the Second World War and the train’s stop in 1941. You can therefore consider the older historical account and the specific military-historical structure as separate topics.
