Subcarpathia, the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, lies in three physiographic provinces: the Western Carpathians, including the Podkarpacie region, the Eastern Carpathians and the Polish Uplands. A prominent landmark in the Bieszczady Mountains is Tarnica: at 1,346 metres, it is the highest point in the voivodeship. The region’s landscape therefore ranges from mountainous areas to the Polish Uplands.

Nature and trails in the Bieszczady Mountains

Protected areas cover almost 50 percent of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Bieszczady National Park protects the highest-altitude areas in the Polish part of the Eastern Carpathians. Those interested in nature and landscapes can also explore nature trails near Bukowe Berdo, Połonina Caryńska and Połonina Wetlińska.

The Bieszczady Starry Sky Park, located in the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, offers another perspective on the night sky. Astronomical presentations and various workshops on the subject are held there. Dates and booking options vary by season; check both before your trip. Nature experiences and astronomy thus offer different ways to plan your time in the region.

Cycling and narrow-gauge railways

For cycling trips, the eastern Green Velo cycling route runs for more than 400 kilometres through the region. Challenging cycling routes can also be found in the Bieszczady Mountains, the Low Beskids and the Słonne Mountains. These offerings are described in different ways: one focuses on the route’s length within the region, while the other highlights the difficulty of routes in the three mountain areas.

Two narrow-gauge railways also offer different experiences. The Przeworsk Narrow-Gauge Railway route is 46 kilometres long and includes a 602-metre-long narrow-gauge railway tunnel. The railway operates from May to September; check the timetable before your trip. The Bieszczady Forest Railway takes passengers to the mountain landscapes in the south of Podkarpackie. If you are considering a train ride as part of your trip, it is helpful to check the route and seasonal service for each railway.

Wooden architecture and museums

The Wooden Architecture Route comprises nine sections totalling 1,202 kilometres and leads to 127 wooden architectural monuments. It offers an extensive thematic introduction to the region’s architectural history. In Krosno, the Podkarpackie Museum houses Europe’s largest collection of petroleum lamps. The Bieszczady National Park Museum in Ustrzyki Dolne features three-dimensional dioramas that realistically depict habitats such as a beaver lodge. These museums focus on different subjects: historic lighting on the one hand, and natural habitats on the other.

Industrial history and regional tastings

In Podkarpackie, the Central Industrial District Route leads to industrial heritage sites, former factories, museums, and workers’ and engineers’ housing estates. The route takes visitors to walking trails and attractions associated with the Central Industrial District in Rzeszów, Nowa Sarzyna, Stalowa Wola, Nowa Dęba, Skopanie, Mielec, Pustków, Pustynia, Dębica and Sędziszów Małopolski. This makes it possible to explore the subject not only through individual buildings, but also through the places and routes mentioned.

At the Carpathian Wine Salon, visitors can enjoy guided tastings of wines from various Carpathian regions, including wines from Podkarpackie. As tasting arrangements may change, confirm them in advance. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether nature trails, cycling routes, railways or museums will be the focus of your trip. These themes offer practical guidance for further planning, without assuming that every destination calls for the same kind of stay.
