Sanok combines cultural attractions with a river and valley landscape. The San River crosses the city from south to north through a belt of valleys formed during the Ice Age, known as the Doły Jasielsko-Krośnieńsko-Sanockie. Sanok lies in two mesoregions: the Sanok-Turcza Mountains and the Bukowsko Foothills. These foothills are one of the two mesoregions that shape Sanok’s varied topography.

Icons, church art and ceramics

The Historical Museum in Sanok displays a collection of 700 icons, as well as other works of church art. Icons and religious art therefore form the focus of a specific cultural theme for your stay.

The museum also offers workshops based on patterns from its collection of traditional pottery. The ceramics workshops provide a different artistic experience alongside the icon collection. If you plan to attend a workshop, confirm its availability in advance.

Choose routes by theme and time required

The Icon Trail is about 70 kilometres long and connects 14 churches in the area around Sanok. The Sanok–Chryszczata hiking trail is 40 kilometres long and takes approximately ten hours. The Sanok–Przemyśl trail is 72 kilometres long and passes through the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills.

The routes differ in their stated focus: the churches are the main attraction on the Icon Trail, while the distance and approximate duration are given for Sanok–Chryszczata, and Sanok–Przemyśl can be identified by the two named landscapes it crosses. This means you can take both the distance and the route’s theme into account when planning.

Swimming and regional cuisine in Sanok

The CRiS swimming complex in Sanok has pools open year-round as well as seasonal outdoor pools, and a rehabilitation area. If swimming is important to your plans, check the facility’s operating status before your trip.

The Skansen in Sanok is home to a tavern in a historic granary dating from 1732. It serves regional dishes, including wholemeal-flour pierogi and Hryczaniki. If you plan to dine there, check in advance whether the tavern is currently open.

Culture and landscape across the wider Powiat sanocki

The wider travel area of the Powiat sanocki offers further cultural and historical themes. Mrzygłód’s historic market square, with its distinctive architectural character, is considered one of the region’s most interesting sights. In Tyrawa Solna stands a wooden Greek Catholic parish church built in 1837 and dedicated to John the Baptist. It is built using log construction and has a post tower. Historically, Tyrawa Solna was also known for extracting salt from brine and making Komięgi, boats used to transport salt along the San River.

The church complex in Dobra includes a 17th-century church whose tower now serves as a gate and bell tower. Another historical feature in Dobra is the figurative polychrome decoration of the former Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas. Antoni and Michał Bogdański created it between 1899 and 1904. In Międzybrodzie, a brick Greek Catholic parish church stands on the tourist Icon Trail. These places offer different architectural points of interest across the wider Powiat area.

The protected landscapes also differ in character. The Słonne Mountains Landscape Park is one of three landscape parks in the Powiat sanocki. The Polanki Nature Reserve near Bykowce protects natural Carpathian beech forest communities. The Zwiezło Nature Reserve near Duszatyn, in the Komańcza municipality, protects two mountain lakes formed by a landslide on the slopes of Chryszczata. Thus, Polanki is known for its forest communities, while Zwiezło is notable for its lakes and how they were formed.

On the Polish side, the Sanok–Humenne railway line runs through the Powiat sanocki along the Osława Valley, passing through the municipalities of Zagórz and Komańcza. If you would like to include the railway in your plans, check separately whether passenger services are currently available.
