Sanok combines cultural and historical attractions with hiking routes. If you choose the town as a travel destination, you can focus on different aspects, from reconstructed architecture and museum collections to trails in the surrounding area. When looking for a hotel in Sanok, you can start planning your trip by deciding whether museums and architecture or hiking will be the deciding factor.

Architecture and Collections in Sanok

The Ethnographic Park at the open-air museum in Sanok comprises more than 150 exhibits. A separate section is devoted to the history of the oil industry. The collection and the story of an industrial sector give the park different cultural and historical dimensions.

One section features a recreation of the architecture of a small Galician town market from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Wooden houses stand around a spacious market square. Their interiors depict craft workshops, an inn, a municipal office, a post office and other establishments. This brings the market to life through more than its architecture: the reconstruction brings together the square, houses and the public and craft uses on display in a single scene.

The park also features a manor house from the village of Święcany. It is a distinct landmark alongside the recreated market square and adds a specific estate to the Ethnographic Park’s varied buildings.

The Historical Museum is housed in Sanok Castle and was founded in 1934. Its collections include icons and works by Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. This means that different cultural highlights sit side by side in Sanok: the collection objects in the castle are the starting point there, while the Ethnographic Park explores other subjects through its market architecture, manor house and history of the oil industry. This distinction can help you decide whether to include art collections or reconstructed settings in your stay.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The blue Szlak Ikon is marked as a hiking trail and runs through Sanok, passing the Historical Museum, the Orthodox cathedral and the Museum of Folk Architecture. The cultural sites listed give the route a cultural focus. Check local conditions before setting out.

A PTTK hiking trail runs from Sanok Main Railway Station via the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills to Przemyśl. Near Sanok, it provides access to Orli Kamień. The route extends beyond Sanok, giving it a different geographical scope from the blue Szlak Ikon, whose listed stops are in Sanok.

Another hiking route combines a PTTK connecting trail from Sanok Main Railway Station to the red hiking trail at Orli Kamień with the red section from there to Sanok-Biała Góra. Together, the two sections form the route. To choose between them, you can compare the routes described: Szlak Ikon passes cultural sites, while the PTTK trails take in Orli Kamień and the route to Sanok-Biała Góra or onward to Przemyśl.
