Wola Michowa: Memorial Sites, Church Site and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Wola Michowa
If you are planning a stay in Wola Michowa, you will find a range of points of interest: memorial sites, the former site of a Greek Catholic church, and the hiking trail to Balnica. The yellow-marked trail begins in the village; the mountain tourism center “Kija chata” is also located here. For your trip planning, you can consider the historical themes and hiking separately. This lets you decide whether remembrance and local history or hiking will be the focus of your stay.
Memorial Sites and Cemetery History
A stone bearing a memorial plaque was erected in the Jewish cemetery in January 2019. It commemorates approximately 150 Jewish people murdered there. In July 2019, plaques bearing the names of Jewish people from Wola Michowa and the surrounding area, along with an information plaque about the cemetery’s history, were unveiled in the same cemetery.
The two installations differ in timing and focus: in January, the emphasis was on commemorating those who were murdered; in July, names from the village and surrounding area, as well as the history of the cemetery, were added. You can thus understand remembrance of the victims and the cemetery’s local history as two connected but distinct aspects.
Greek Catholic Cemetery and Church Site
At the entrance to the Greek Catholic cemetery stands a memorial stone honoring the residents of Wola Michowa of various nationalities who are buried there. The former church site is another point of reference in the village’s history. A brick Greek Catholic church dating from 1843 once stood there; it no longer exists. The memorial stone and the former church represent different forms of remembrance of the village: a memorial at the cemetery entrance and a church building that no longer exists. The year 1843 is part of the history of this former building.
Hiking Trail and Mountain Tourism
The yellow-marked hiking trail begins in Wola Michowa and leads to the former Balnica–Osadne border crossing. Since accession to the Schengen Area, this crossing has no longer functioned as a border crossing. The route therefore has a historical connection at its destination, while its starting point is in Wola Michowa. The mountain tourism center “Kija chata” is also located in the village. The trail and the center are distinct points of reference for mountain tourism: one is a named hiking route, the other a named center.
