Szarki: River Landscape and Cultural Heritage in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Szarki
When choosing a hotel in Szarki, you can plan your trip around two themes: river and cycling activities in the surrounding area, and historic buildings near Krzepice and Danków. The specific routes and places offer different ways to shape your stay.
Canoeing and Cycling Routes in the Surrounding Area
The canoe route on the Liswarta runs for 41 kilometres from Starokrzepice to Kule. You can extend the trip along the Warta to Działoszyn, for a total of 57 kilometres. When weighing up the route length, distinguish the Liswarta route from its longer option via the Warta.
The Liswarta has very clean water and numerous rapids. It is not easy to navigate along its entire length; some sections are considered suitable for children. Which sections are suitable depends on the conditions and your paddling experience. Along the canoe route, there are warnings about river hazards, as well as information about portage points, rest areas and sights. Check the route information before setting out.
The Szlak Pankówki cycling route is also signposted in the area around Szarki. R-1 signs, placed at frequent intervals, show the direction. Information boards display cycling route maps and descriptions of sights; R-3 signs indicate distances to other localities. For your specific ride, it is worth checking the route markings on site. You can also explore Załęczański Landscape Park by bicycle, on horseback or by kayak on a trip along the Warta.
Church and Cemetery History near Krzepice
Near Krzepice stands the single-nave Gothic parish church of St James the Apostle, built of red brick. It was founded by King Casimir the Great in the 14th century. The church stands at a corner of the market square; its appearance combines Gothic origins with Baroque elements added later. Its architectural form, location and different styles offer several points of interest if you are interested in the region’s architectural history.
Another aspect of the cultural heritage is the Jewish cemetery in Krzepice. It is considered a site with one of the largest concentrations of cast-iron matzevot in Europe. Together with the parish church, it shapes the range of historical attractions in the area, but offers a different perspective on history: the development of a church building on one hand, and the extraordinary concentration of cast-iron tombstones on the other.
Fortress and Pilgrimage Church near Danków
Near Danków, the history of the fortress can be understood through several periods. It was extensively rebuilt in the 1630s and fitted with bastion fortifications. After the fire of 1767, it gradually fell into ruin. In the second half of the 19th century, it was demolished down to its foundations; its ramparts were preserved in the 1960s.
The pilgrimage church of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Danków was built within the fortress between 1641 and 1675. The 17th-century church building has been preserved. Another distinct historical reference is the image of Our Lady of Danków, which was solemnly crowned on 25 May 2002. The history of the fortress, the surviving church building and this precisely dated event each offer a different point in time.
Landscape in the Krzepice Municipality
The Wieluń Upland extends through the Krzepice Municipality between Wieluń and Częstochowa. The Liswarta–Prosna depression is also located there, traversed by the upper courses of both rivers. The valleys of the Liswarta and Pankówka, together with small nearby forest complexes, form ecological corridors of regional and local importance. These landscape features complement the river routes and historic buildings with a geographical perspective on the region.
