Danków: Fortress Ruins, Church and Liswarta Kayak Trail
Accommodation in Danków
When looking for a hotel for a stay in Danków, you can plan your trip around two local themes: the history of the fortress and village, or the marked kayak trail on the Liswarta. The fortress ruins lie on the river’s left bank in the eastern part of the village; the kayak trail passes through Danków. First consider whether the historic site and church, or a section of the waterway, will be the focus of your stay.
The Fortress on the Liswarta
The fortress in Danków is the only structure of its kind in Poland. The surviving outer fortifications of the castle ruins include bastions arranged in a star-like shape and earthworks faced with masonry. Also preserved are the ruins of the Brama Krzepicka gate and a fragment of the wall of the so-called Dom Kasztelanowej. These structures offer several specific aspects of the fortress theme: the shape of the bastions, the fortified earthworks, and the remains of the gate and wall. A historical episode is also associated with the site: the castle was not captured during the Swedish Deluge.
Meetings, Monuments and Remembrance
In 1217, a meeting of Polish Piast dukes was held in Danków, attended by Henry the Bearded and Leszek the White. Bishops also gathered here for assemblies in 1238 and 1267. Chronologically, the bishops’ assembly of 1238 followed the ducal meeting, with another assembly held later in 1267. During celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the village, an obelisk was consecrated in Danków to commemorate a meeting of Piast rulers; it bears a relief depicting three Piast dukes.
A mass war grave in Danków is dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the 83rd Polesie Rifle Regiment from Kobryn: Konstanty Kolada, Ignacy Matejas, Stefan Szmaj and Zawadziński, as well as five unknown soldiers. They fell on 1 September 1939. The memorial adds another period of local history to the medieval events, naming the fallen as well as the unit to which they belonged.
Church and Sacred Art
The Church of Saint Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, is a masonry building erected between 1641 and 1675. An original wooden Church of Saint Stanislaus had already stood in Danków in the 13th century. The comparison brings the different materials and periods into focus: wood in the 13th century and masonry in the 17th century. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Danków received eight stained-glass windows in 2000. The image of Our Lady of Danków was crowned on 25 May 2002. Alongside the building’s history, these are two specific dates relating to the sacred furnishings and the Marian image.
Stations of the Cross on the Former Castle Ramparts
The Stations of the Cross in Danków were established in 2002 on the defensive ramparts of the former castle. They comprise 14 stations carved from white sandstone. Their location on the former fortifications connects the religious theme with the village’s fortress history.
The Liswarta Kayak Trail
The marked Liswarta kayak trail passes through Danków. The Danków–Zawady section is also specifically described for planning purposes: it includes two portages and numerous rapids. If you include this section in your trip, take these features into account when planning your route. This makes the waterway a distinct travel focus, separate from the village’s architectural and historical themes.
