The municipality of Prudnik lies at the foot of the Opawskie Mountains, a small range in the Eastern Sudetes, right on the border with the Czech Republic. It is located in the Opawskie Mountains Landscape Park and its buffer zone. You can get to know Prudnik through both its cultural attractions and the municipality’s landscape. These include the mountain massifs of Góra Parkowa, Długota and Kobylica, as well as Biskupia Kopa, which forms a striking backdrop to Prudnik.

Landscape and Cultural History

Kobylica is 392 metres high. Above a pond in a former quarry stands a three-metre-tall granite obelisk dedicated to the Romantic poet Joseph von Eichendorff. Another historical landmark is the Sanctuary of St. Joseph (Sanktuarium św. Józefa), where Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was interned in 1954 and 1955. The two places offer contrasting points of interest: a poet’s memorial in a former quarry landscape, and the history of Wyszyński’s internment.

For a visit focused on culture, consider the Muzeum Ziemi Prudnickiej – Arsenał in Prudnik. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 and on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 16:00. Opening hours may change; check them before your visit.

City Walks and Cycling Routes

The Prudnicki Szlak Miejski (Prudnik City Trail) runs for 4.5 kilometres through the most noteworthy places in the city of Prudnik. The route is marked with blue and red squares, the city’s colours; signage may change. It offers a signed route for linking several city attractions in one outing.

The two “Wokół Lasu Prudnickiego” (Around Prudnik Forest) cycling loops differ in length and route. Loop I is 20 kilometres long and runs from Prudnik via Łąka Prudnicka, Moszczanka, Wieszczyna and Dębowiec, then back to Prudnik. At 13.5 kilometres, Loop II is shorter; it runs via the Sanctuary of St. Joseph, Rozdroże pod Trzebiną and Dębowiec, then back to the city. Their stated distances and the places they pass through make it easy to distinguish the two loops.

Another cycling route runs from Prudnik via Dębowiec and across the Polish-Czech border to Jindrichov. It is 10 kilometres long, 7 kilometres of which are within the municipality of Prudnik, and is marked in blue and green. The 15-kilometre Prudnik–Moszna cycling path starts at the Stanisław-Szozda roundabout in Prudnik. There is also an 11-kilometre horse-riding trail between Moszczanka and the Sanctuary of St. Joseph, marked in yellow.

More Trails and Planning Your Visit

The municipality of Prudnik has a 35-kilometre network of multifunctional tourist trails, with signposted routes and numerous rest stops featuring tourist maps. The M. Orłowicz Trail is considered the main trail in the Opawskie Mountains and the Polish Sudetes; it starts at Prudnik railway station. Signage and trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

An important point to bear in mind when planning your visit concerns Woka Tower: it is closed indefinitely until the necessary structural repairs are completed. The closure may change. Check the current access arrangements before visiting.
