Namysłów: Market Square, Mill Island and the Widawa
Accommodation in Namysłów
Namysłów’s rectangular market square measures 142 by 70 metres, with ten streets leading off it. The Widawa flows through the town, and Namysłów is the county seat of Namysłowski County. The town’s history, its waterways and outdoor activities offer different possible focuses for planning your trip.
City history between the railway and the castle
The railway’s history is associated with two distinct events: the first railway line from Wrocław to Namysłów was completed on 17 May 1868. Three days later, on 20 May, the first locomotive ceremonially arrived at Namysłów station. The dates therefore mark first the completion of the line and then the locomotive’s arrival.
Namysłów Castle took on its present form from 1360 onwards, by order of the Bohemian King Charles IV. He also funded part of the town’s fortifications. The castle is located on the grounds of the Namysłów Brewery, so access may be restricted. Check whether access is possible before your visit. The brewery has a brewing tradition dating back seven centuries.
The mill, regional history and religious sites
The Muzeum Techniki Młynarskiej is dedicated to Namysłów’s town mill. First mentioned in the 14th century, it was moved outside the fortifications in 1418 to the medieval “Mill Island”. Four waterwheels were powered by the Młynówka, a tributary of the Widawa. The museum displays original milling equipment. Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement; the listed hours are Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Confirm visiting arrangements by phone in advance.
The Izba Regionalna is a cultural centre in a former Evangelical school dating from 1789. The Szlak różnorodności religijnej offers another perspective on Namysłów’s history. In the town, it leads to the churches of St Peter and St Paul and St Francis, a memorial to the former Evangelical Church of St Andrew, and the former synagogue, which is now a sports hall. The sites include both religious places and buildings whose function has changed.
Cycling, water and birdwatching
For a longer activity, consider the easy tourist cycling route “Rowerem wokół Namysłowa – Trasa 2, southern section”. It is 37.9 kilometres long, with a stated riding time of 3.0 to 4.0 hours. Check the route details before planning, as they may be updated if the route changes.
The Michalice Reservoir lies 1.5 kilometres north of Namysłów. It offers good conditions for windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, and there are also campsites. Water activities provide a different focus from sightseeing in town. Conditions and campsite facilities may change.
The Młyńskie Stawy, a birdwatching site, are located in the municipality near Żaba. Waterbirds such as swans, coots, herons and cormorants are regularly found there. An observation tower stands on the shore of one of the ponds. The Widawa flows through Namysłów; the wider Namysłowski County also has numerous forests and bodies of water.
The wider travel area
The wider travel area also offers points of interest for those interested in culture and nature. The Szlak Drewnianych Kościołów begins at the church in Woskowice Małe. The Szlak Miłośników Przyrody offers walks along tree-lined avenues and opportunities to observe birds. A historic granary in the hamlet of Świbne near Woskowice Górne was built at the turn of the 20th century.
Practical visit planning
The “Delfin” leisure and indoor swimming pool is equipped for people with disabilities. Its listed opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. Confirm opening times and any access conditions relevant to you in advance.
When planning a hotel stay, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: cultural and historical sites in Namysłów, or activities such as cycling, watersports and birdwatching. You can then plan your days around the experiences that matter most to you.
