In Krapkowice, the cityscape is shaped by a medieval-style market square, remnants of former fortifications and experiences along the Oder. This brings together different interests when planning your trip: architecture and urban history, stories along the Obuwniczy Szlak, and activities on the river.

History in the Cityscape

Krapkowicka Baszta is the tower of the Upper Gate. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and renovated around 1580. Today, the tower houses a tourist information centre, exhibition rooms on several floors and a viewing terrace with a telescope. If you are interested in historical changes, the construction and renovation dates provide two points of reference.

Krapkowicki Rynek has a typically medieval layout: a fountain stands in the centre of the rectangular square, old townhouses line its sides, and narrow access streets lead to it. Here, you can explore the city’s history through the interplay of the square’s shape, rows of houses and central fountain—unlike at a single historic building.

The castle lies near the Old Town and within the administrative boundaries of Krapkowice. The imposing building is quadrangular and dates from the late Renaissance. There is a qualification regarding its early history: it is thought that the castle already existed in the 13th century. In 1275, Krapkowice was granted town rights by Władysław, Duke of Opole.

At the castle ruins in Otmęt, remnants of living quarters, the ruin of the southeastern tower, the perimeter wall and a semicircular bastion at the southwestern corner have survived. The oldest masonry remains date from the 16th century. These features provide different clues as to what remains of the complex.

Stories and Experiences on the Oder

The Obuwniczy Szlak is approximately 6 km long and shares stories and legends from Krapkowice’s past centuries. It features mysterious bronze shoes with names such as Laciek, Mieszczuch, Kopytko, Pepoż, Rogatek, Rolszpila, Tempel and Wyczynówka, as well as QR codes. This themed trail offers a different focus from the historic buildings: it centres on stories connected to the city’s earlier centuries.

At Port Jachtowy Krapkowice, where the Osobłoga flows into the Oder, you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and boats. Trips are also offered on the Oder, with views of Krapkowice’s medieval castle. This makes for a clear distinction when planning: exploring the city’s history on land or taking a trip on the river.

Landscape and Routes in Powiat Krapkowicki

Powiat Krapkowicki lies in the central part of Opole Voivodeship, along the upper Oder and at the foot of Góra Świętej Anny. The Oder and Osobłoga valleys make the powiat well suited to hiking, cycling and birdwatching. These activities relate to the wider travel area, not solely to the city of Krapkowice.

The “Doliny Odry” settlement area also stretches across several municipalities in the powiat: Walce, Zdzieszowice, Krapkowice and Gogolin. The powiat also includes the Łęg Zdzieszowicki and Żywocickie Łęgi Natura 2000 sites. These regional connections broaden the focus beyond the city to include the landscape and protected natural areas of the wider travel region.

Cyclists can use an interactive cycling map of the powiat, featuring a detailed network of routes, roads and cycle paths. When choosing a route, you can take into account the time available, the distance you want to cover and the level of difficulty. The map supports independent route planning across the powiat, while the approximately 6 km Obuwniczy Szlak offers a specific, shorter themed option in Krapkowice.
