Odolanów: Churches, Museum and Trails
Accommodation in Odolanów
Odolanów brings together buildings from several centuries, museum exhibits and recreational activities in town. To get your bearings, it is worth noting the differences: the churches and town hall represent different construction periods and architectural styles, the regional museum focuses on history and ethnography, while the cycle route, walk and high ropes course offer further options for planning your stay.
Churches and other buildings
The wooden St Barbara’s Church in Odolanów-Górka dates from 1784 and is located in the cemetery on ul. Spokojna. St Martin’s Church in Odolanów was built between 1790 and 1794; fragments of carvings from destroyed crosses have been preserved inside. Both churches offer a glimpse into the architectural history of the late 18th century, but each has a different emphasis: St Barbara’s stands out for its wooden construction, while St Martin’s is notable for its preserved carving fragments. The former Protestant church in Odolanów is also listed in the heritage register. A revitalization project envisaged converting it from religious to cultural use.
Odolanów Town Hall was built in 1898–1899 in the Neo-Gothic style. Neo-Gothic design draws on Gothic architecture and places the town hall clearly after the 18th-century churches. On the outskirts of town stands a water tower built in 1903. It is 28 metres high from the ground to the roof cupola. Together, the construction dates trace a timeline from the late 18th century, through the town hall, to the early 20th century; the style, construction period and measurement each offer a different point of comparison.
History and art at the regional museum
The regional museum’s permanent exhibition focuses on history: it is devoted entirely to the events of the Greater Poland Uprising. The museum also has an extensive ethnographic section featuring important works by 19th-century folk sculptor Paweł Bryliński. The events of the uprising and works of folk art are thus presented as distinct themes. If you are planning a museum visit, check the latest exhibition information in advance.
Parks, trails and activities
Park 600-lecia stretches along Kaliska Street in Odolanów; a monument to St Martin stands above the park. The theme of St Martin therefore appears both in the park monument and in the name of St Martin’s Church. A town monument and a church building are thus linked by a shared theme, without representing the same thing.
A walk through Odolanów offers insights into the town’s mysteries and explores who its most famous resident was and what made him well known. Check in advance whether an app or audio version is available. The orange-marked “Dolina Baryczy” cycle route includes the Odolanów–Grabownica section. The walk and cycle route have different focuses: the former explores local history, while the latter follows a named section of a cycle route. Odolanów also has a high ropes course, offering another activity to consider when planning your stay.
The landscape should also be considered at the municipal level: within Odolanów Municipality, Dolina Baryczy Landscape Park covers 5,400 hectares. Buildings, recreational activities in town and the surrounding landscape offer different perspectives on Odolanów as you decide which themes you want to shape your stay.
