Żelazków: Manor Farm, Manor House and Landscape Park
Accommodation in Żelazków
Żelazków offers a clear historical focus when choosing a destination: the manor farm complex with its manor house, landscape park, enclosure gate and former farm buildings. The building history, park design and former functions of the buildings offer different insights into the estate. If you are interested in manor farm history and designed landscapes, you will find several specific points of interest here that make Żelazków distinctive as a destination.
Manor Farm and Manor House: Two Stages in the Building History
The manor farm complex was built in the second half of the 18th century for the Radoliński family, who owned it at the time. The manor house was later partially remodelled, from 1796 to 1798, based on designs by Warsaw architect Fryderyk Albert Lessel. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction of the complex from the later changes to the manor house.
The manor house is a single-storey building with a mansard storey. This layout adds the house’s exterior form to its building history: alongside Lessel’s partial remodelling, the combination of a main storey and a mansard storey is also a feature of its architecture. Both its architectural form and the different phases of its development are therefore important to understanding the manor house.
Landscape Park with Avenues and Pond
The landscape park covers more than 1.5 hectares. It is a remnant of a formal 18th-century park, which was redesigned in the 19th century. Its development thus combines the original formal design with later changes.
Two chestnut avenues extend from the manor house in a V shape and define the park’s symmetry. A small pond lies between them. The avenues describe the spatial layout of the landscape park, while its area of more than 1.5 hectares provides an additional sense of its extent. Its history and design complement each other: its origins date back to the 18th century, while its redesign in the 19th century marks a further phase.
Gate, Farm Buildings and Former Manor Houses
The spatial axis of the manor farm complex runs through the park, the manor house and the entrance gate. The enclosure gate was built in 1891 and later rebuilt after suffering severe damage. Its history therefore includes both its construction date and its subsequent reconstruction.
The buildings’ former functions also give the manor farm complex a distinct economic dimension. A two-storey brick farm building dating from the first half of the 19th century formerly served as a mill and the estate’s power station. These uses represent different functions within the estate.
Three former manor houses have been preserved north of the farmyards: one on the edge of the estate and two at a road junction. Their locations add further parts of the former manor farm layout to the sequence of park, manor house and farm buildings. Żelazków’s historic character thus brings together landscape, residential buildings and agricultural areas.
