When planning a stay in Puebla, it is worth exploring several themes: pre-Hispanic cities and settlements, historic buildings, a September tradition and distinctive natural areas. The archaeological sites differ in their layout and in what they reveal about architecture and everyday life. There are also landscapes whose character ranges from a dry lava field to an extraordinary diversity of plant life.

Archaeological Sites and Their Architectural Forms

Cantona is a fortified pre-Hispanic city on a rugged, dry lava field. Its layout includes around 4,000 interconnected streets and numerous ball courts. This combination draws attention both to connections within the city and to the spaces used for ball games. Cantona is open Monday through Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00; the last entry is at 16:00. Check opening hours before your trip.

Tepexi el Viejo has a different form: the pre-Hispanic Popoloca settlement dates from the Postclassic period and includes a fortified area, large stone chambers and monumental structures. It lies on a hill, flanked by deep ravines on three sides and surrounded by a massive stone wall. Here, the fortifications and the terrain shape the impression of the site.

At Teteles de Santo Nombre, the archaeological site and the Museo de Sitio Teteles de Santo Nombre offer different ways to explore the site's history. The museum has eight exhibition rooms covering the site's heyday, trade routes, monumental architecture and everyday life. The archaeological site includes three large pyramid-shaped structures and an access platform. At 14 meters high, Edificio Caracoles is its largest building. Teteles de Santo Nombre is considered an important pre-Hispanic settlement for understanding connections between central Mexico, the Gulf region and Oaxaca.

Cholula and Atlixco: Architecture and Tradition

The ancient settlement of Cholula lies between San Andrés Cholula and San Pedro Cholula, six kilometers from the capital, Puebla, along the direct Ruta Quetzalcóatl highway. Among the most important attractions in its archaeological zone are the Great Pyramid and the Patio de los Altares. Cholula therefore offers a distinct archaeological focus for your trip planning. The historic center of the city of Puebla, in turn, was strategically located on a trade and cultural route between the port of Veracruz and Mexico City.

Atlixco lies on the slopes of Popocatépetl, and flowers are part of the everyday landscape there. The town's history and traditions are also reflected in its architecture: the Ex Convento del Carmen dates back to the 16th century. At the Huey Atlixcayotl in September, music and dances are performed in honor of Quetzalcóatl and Xochipilli. If this festival fits your travel interests, check the dates for the current year in advance.

Landscape and Nature in Puebla

The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve extends across Puebla and Oaxaca. It has an extraordinary diversity of plant life, including species found nowhere else. The reserve is a point of reference for tourists and researchers, and shows how nature conservation and opportunities for local communities can be connected.
