Zacapoaxtla: Churches, Cultural Programs and Traditional Breads
Accommodation in Zacapoaxtla
When planning a hotel stay in Zacapoaxtla, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: church and local history, cultural programs tied to particular months, or culinary themes. The town offers concrete points of interest in all three areas. If a particular program is the deciding factor for your trip, check its date and search for hotels based on your travel dates.
Church and Archaeological History
In the Centro of Zacapoaxtla, at José Sixto Verduzco 4, you’ll find the Conjunto de la Parroquia Lateranense de San Pedro Apóstol. It is considered a religious building complex. The church was granted parish status in 1798 and bears the name Parroquia Lateranense de San Pedro Apóstol.
Remains of the town’s first chapel, built in the 16th century, were discovered in the parish. A glyph carved in stone, associated with the area’s pre-Hispanic settlement, was also found there. Mexico’s Ministry of Culture reported the discovery on June 8, 2023. The two finds thus represent different historical reference points: pre-Hispanic settlement and the first chapel of the 16th century.
The Museo Comunitario Xolalpancalli is located at Plaza de la Constitución in Zacapoaxtla’s Centro Histórico.
Cultural Programs by Month
The cultural tourism programs are assigned to different months. January features the Monumental Rosca de Reyes, and March the Festival del Artesano. Three programs are on the calendar in April: the Festival de la “torta de camarón,” the Callejoneada Zacapoaxtla and the Festival de “Medicina Tradicional.” July features the Festival del “Tayoyo Ranchero,” August the Festival del “Chile en Nogada,” and September the Festival de la “Independencia.” The Desfile de Calaveras is scheduled for October, the Festival “La fiesta de la vida” for November, and the Festival “Una Navidad Mágica” for December.
The monthly listings give you a first indication if you want a particular program to influence your travel dates. However, they are no substitute for checking the specific event date: do so before booking to make sure your travel dates match. If you’re planning without being tied to a specific program, the church and historical landmarks can be the focus of your trip.
Breads and Local Character
The Corredor Gastronómico de Panaderos is located on José Sixto Verduzco. When it opened in November 2024, visitors could sample traditional breads such as pan de muerto, hojaldras, calabazas and pan rojo. The breads were made with local ingredients and time-honored recipes.
Zacapoaxtla is located in the northeastern Sierra of Puebla and is considered to be surrounded by green mountains. Passing clouds, a distinctive climate and a colonial-style townscape also contribute to its characteristic atmosphere. These descriptions of the landscape and architecture add another dimension of the destination to the specific cultural sites.
