Chignahuapan offers a range of highlights for your stay: historic buildings, murals, Laguna Almoloya and religious festival traditions. The Mudéjar kiosk and the Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol reflect different periods of construction and architectural features. The Catrinas Mural Walk forms an artistic corridor leading toward the lagoon. When planning your trip, it is also worth distinguishing permanent attractions from festivals held on fixed calendar dates.

Architecture from the Mudéjar Kiosk to the Basilica

Built in 1871, the Mudéjar kiosk is considered unique of its kind nationwide. It stands on a raised platform, has no walls and is open on all sides. Columns or pillars support the roof, which is fitted with eight lanterns; there is a fountain in the center. The interplay of these elements shapes the kiosk’s appearance: the platform, open sides, supporting structures and roof form a clear design that can be viewed from every side. The kiosk is one of Chignahuapan’s attractions and offers a different architectural focus from the local churches.

The Parroquia de Santiago ApĂłstol was built in the 16th century. As a Baroque religious building, it features gilded altarpieces and intricately crafted sculptures. Stone walls, frescoes and altars are also part of its description, reflecting religious devotion and cultural heritage. Another highlight is the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, which houses a twelve-meter-tall Marian figure carved entirely from cedar. It is considered the largest covered representation of the Immaculate Conception in all of Latin America. In 1999, the church was granted the status of a basilica and recognized as part of the cultural heritage because of the sculpture preserved there.

Murals and Laguna Almoloya

The Catrinas Mural Walk turns Chignahuapan’s streets into an open-air gallery. Inspired by Catrinas and skulls, the murals celebrate the Day of the Dead. The corridor leads toward Laguna Almoloya and pays tribute to José Guadalupe Posada’s Catrina. It is ideal for walks, urban photography and viewing the work of local artists. The Cosmogonic Mural offers a different theme, drawing on the symbolic and spiritual richness of Nahua thought.

Laguna Almoloya is a few blocks from the center of Chignahuapan. It invites visitors to walk and relax, and fishing is another activity the lagoon offers. Murals and the lagoon thus represent different yet interconnected themes in the city: the Mural Walk leads toward the water, while the lagoon itself offers space for a more peaceful stay. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus primarily on art in the city or on the lagoon as a place to walk and spend time.

Festivals and the best dates to visit

On November 1, the Festival of Light and Life includes a procession from the town center to the lagoon, dedicated to the deceased. Chignahuapan’s patron saint festival on July 25 includes a procession from the Santuario del Honguito to Cerro del Calvario. During the annual patron saint festival, the Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol and its surroundings also come alive with music, dancing and colorful processions. The two dates have different focuses: November centers on remembering the deceased, while July is dedicated to the patron saint celebration. If a festival is a deciding factor in choosing when to travel, check that year’s program before your trip.

The Santuario del Honguito also offers a cultural point of interest: there, you can learn about the history of the Honguito and admire the chapel’s simple architecture. Together with the churches, kiosk, murals and lagoon, it offers a range of reasons to choose Chignahuapan as a destination. Plan your hotel stay around your interests: architecture, urban art, time by the lagoon or a visit during one of the festivals each creates a different focus for your trip.
