Discover Thorold: Locks, Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Thorold
Thorold’s sightseeing options are shaped by the Welland Canal and several sites connected to the city’s history. There are also trails for cycling and hiking, along with seasonal offerings. Plan your stay around whether you’re most interested in lock views, heritage, nature or events.
Locks, Canal History and Cycling Routes
The Lock 7 Viewing Centre offers views of ships passing through Locks 4, 5, 6 and 7. Ship movements and facility operations are seasonal. The centre is wheelchair accessible; check the accessibility information again before your trip. Staff can answer questions about the history of the Welland Canal, Thorold and the Niagara Region.
Four of the eight locks on the fourth Welland Canal are in Thorold, including the Twin Flight Locks. The original Welland Canal ran through downtown Thorold and ended at Port Robinson on the Welland River. This helps distinguish two different sections of the canal’s history: the earlier route through downtown and the locks of the fourth canal.
For a bike ride, the Greater Niagara Circle Route runs directly past the Lock 7 Viewing Centre. From there, you can ride to the bike-friendly Downtown Heritage District. Routes and trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. The Bridge-it route connects Thorold with the Niagara River Recreational Trail and the Greater Niagara Circle Route. Bridge-it is an accessible ferry across the Welland Canal and operates seasonally. Check operating dates before your trip.
Historic Sites and City History
Battle of Beaverdams Park combines convenient pathways with historic memorials: walkways lead from Ormond and Towpath Streets to Sullivan Avenue. The park is home to Thorold’s Millennium Cairn and historic plaques, including one to Thorold’s founding father. The Battle of Beaver Dams National Historic Site in Thorold commemorates a decisive British victory during the War of 1812.
The remains of DeCew House stand in DeCew House Heritage Park. During the War of 1812, the house was the destination of Laura Secord’s journey. Thorold also offers phone-based virtual tours: one features historic downtown homes, another takes you by car through the city’s rural areas, and a cemetery tour covers well-known figures as well as darker stories from Thorold’s past. The historic homes featured are privately owned.
The Thorold Indigenous Unity Garden is an inclusive outdoor learning space. People of all nations can reflect on, learn about and honour Indigenous teachings and traditions there. Offerings and workshops may vary.
Trails and Nature on the Niagara Escarpment
DeCew House Heritage Park provides access to the Bruce Trail and the Trans Canada Trail, which hikers and mountain bikers can use to explore the Niagara Escarpment. The Laura Secord Trail leads from the park to DeCew Falls. The waterfall is 22 metres high; a historic, restored grist mill stands at the top.
At Mel Swart–Lake Gibson Conservation Park, restoration efforts have helped numerous native bird and animal species return. Which species can be seen there varies seasonally. The park adds a natural setting to the historic and canal-related stops, with wildlife that varies throughout the year.
Market, Concerts and Ship Watching
The Thorold Community Market is located in downtown’s Battle of the Beaverdams Park. It offers fresh produce, flowers and baked goods from local farmers; offerings and vendors may vary by season. Local wines and beers are available each week in the licensed area. Market dates and operating days may also change, so it’s worth checking the current schedule.
In summer, the Thorold Reed Band presents a free concert series on selected Wednesdays at the bandshell in Battle of Beaverdams Park. Individual dates may vary; check before your trip. At Port Robinson Park, you can watch ships pass through the locks on the Welland Canal. Whether ships pass by depends on the schedule. There is also a splash pad for younger children.
