Wainfleet: Marshville Heritage Festival and Fall Fair
Accommodation in Wainfleet
Wainfleet offers several different reasons to visit: historic demonstrations at the Marshville Heritage Festival, the Wainfleet Fall Fair weekend and nature activities at the Wainfleet Wetlands. If you want to plan your travel dates around a festival, comparing the dates of the two events can help. For a more specific focus, Heritage Village, Dean Garage and GeoHike offer concrete points of interest, ranging from the heritage of an earlier settlement to nature observation.
Historic demonstrations at the Marshville Heritage Festival
The Marshville Heritage Festival was established in 1989. It features historic demonstrations in and around a restored 19th-century Wainfleet settlement, which was then called Marshville. The settlement’s former name is part of its history, and the demonstrations take place in its surroundings. If you are interested in local history, the festival brings together a named historical period and a tangible presentation on site. Two different time periods meet here: the 19th-century settlement and the festival’s launch in 1989.
Two events, different dates
The Marshville Heritage Festival takes place every year over Labour Day weekend at Heritage Village in Wainfleet. The Wainfleet Fall Fair has a different annual date: it takes place on the third weekend of September, at its grounds in Wainfleet Village. The Fall Fair features a full weekend of celebrations and competitions for all ages. This distinguishes two different event profiles and date ranges: historic demonstrations in the restored settlement setting, and the Fair weekend with its competitions. Check the current dates for both events before travelling.
Buildings and vehicles at Heritage Village
Marshville Heritage Village preserves historic buildings and gives visitors knowledge and an experience of the past. Dean Garage was transferred to the Marshville Heritage Society in the summer of 1995 and added to Marshville Heritage Village. A 1913 McLaughlin and a 1928 Rugby tow truck are on display in Dean Garage. The two vehicles were built 15 years apart, providing two distinct dated reference points for the historic display. The building’s transfer in 1995 marks a different stage in preservation from the construction years of the vehicles on display.
Nature activities at the Wainfleet Wetlands
The Wainfleet Wetlands offer passive recreational activities such as walking, birdwatching and nature photography. Each appeals to different interests: walking focuses on movement, birdwatching on attentive observation, and nature photography on looking for subjects. GeoHike at the Wainfleet Wetlands was developed by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (PGO). When planning a visit, check current conditions, as operating conditions may change.
If you are looking for a hotel in Wainfleet, first decide whether you want a festival date or the area’s nature activities to shape your stay. This lets you plan your travel around your reason for visiting without treating the two event periods as the same.
