Oosterend on Texel can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: its protected village setting, the Maartenskerk, hiking trails and nature experiences. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, these highlights can help you choose what to explore based on your interests. The following sections distinguish between a walk around the village, a hike starting in De Slufter and activities scheduled seasonally.

Village setting and the Maartenskerk

Oosterend is designated as a protected village setting under registration number 1457. Narrow streets run around the church, lined with houses whose wooden gables shape the village’s character. In the Maartenskerk, the oldest part of the present-day church building dates from the early 11th century. It is located between the tower and the transept and was built of tuff stone. Two distinct points of reference help you understand the village’s history: the designation of the village setting and a precisely dated section of the church.

Nature and seasonal activities

The Wagejot nature area lies on the eastern side of Texel, at the same latitude as Oosterend. The wetland is especially attractive to birds, was created during the 1977 dike reinforcement and can be viewed clearly from the Lancasterdijk. Oosterend is also home to Natuur Goed, an edible nature garden covering one hectare. Edible plants, berries and nuts grow there. The “Theeproeverij – de smaken van de natuur” offers a selection of teas and small bites; more than 20 types of herbs grow in the garden. Dates for this seasonal activity may change. Check the dates if you’d like to include the Theeproeverij in your plans.

Hikes around Oosterend

Route lengths offer a straightforward way to compare hikes. The Boerenommetje is a 5.3 km walking route around Oosterend. The free Vissersommetje is 5 km long and passes some of Oosterend’s most beautiful spots. The “Slufter tot Kaap” hike is also free, covers 12 km and runs from De Slufter to Oosterend. It is therefore the longest of the three routes with a specified distance, and also differs in its starting point. The Historische Leitjesroute passes through Oosterend; check its availability locally. Another historic walking route is titled “Oosterend: een verborgen parel rond 5 kerken”.

Local history and traditions

The village’s built heritage and local life offer further points of interest. The historic drainage complex at Stuifweg 4, including the mill, has been restored, and a so-called Rundmaalcircuit has also been created. A building at Peperstraat 26 was restored in 1981; the work was completed in 1982. Today, the building is used primarily as a music center. Oosterend’s Advent window tradition began in 2007 and has taken place every year since. Dates and participating houses vary from year to year. If you’d like to include the tradition in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.
