De Cocksdorp: Mudflats, dunes and walking trails
Accommodation in De Cocksdorp
In De Cocksdorp, the coastal landscape and nature experiences at the northern tip of Texel take center stage. If you are looking for a hotel in De Cocksdorp, the trails, mudflat excursions and views can help you tailor your plans to your personal interests. Activities range from walks through dunes and a nature reserve to a mudflat excursion with a set duration or a day trip to Vlieland.
Coastal landscape and nature
At the northern tip of Texel, the Wadden Sea and the North Sea meet. From the Vuurtoren Texel lighthouse, you can look out over the North Sea, the Wadden Sea, the northern part of Texel and nearby Vlieland. There are dangerous currents in the sea area off the northern tip of De Cocksdorp. Check local conditions before going into the water.
The Dorpzicht route passes through a nature reserve along the Roggesloot, an old tidal creek, and through flower-rich, nutrient-poor grasslands. Along the way, you will encounter both the waterway and the open grassland. There are many walking trails in the northern dune area. The area is also home to many bird species, including rare ones.
Walking trails and route planning
The Noord-Hollandpad is 284 kilometers long and starts in De Cocksdorp. Its first stage begins north of the village on Vuurtorenweg and can be reached by public transport on Texelhopper. The total distance and the start of the first stage answer different planning questions: Vuurtorenweg is the relevant landmark for starting the first stage.
On the Noord-Hollandpad, the Eijerlands Kanaal is crossed using a hand-pulled ferry. Take note of the ferry's local operating conditions and check them before your walk. This allows you to factor in the crossing when planning, without treating it as an ordinary section of the trail.
Mudflats and excursions
The Wadexcursie De Cocksdorp lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and offers an immersive experience of the mudflats. Participants look for and observe animals that live on the mudflats. The duration gives you a specific time frame for this activity, which focuses on the wildlife of the mudflats.
Depending on the season, De Vriendschap offers excursions to observe seals in the Wadden Sea area. Day trips between Texel and Vlieland are also available. After the crossing, you can rent bicycles and explore Vlieland. As these trips are seasonal, it is advisable to check the available dates before traveling. The activities have different focuses: seal-watching centers on wildlife in the Wadden Sea area, while the day trip combines a crossing with exploring Vlieland.
History and special places
De Cocksdorp was named after N.J. de Cock, a shipowner from Antwerp. A dike eleven kilometers long was built by 1,500 workers in twenty weeks. Part of the mudflat area was enclosed by the dike; this area is now known as the Eierlandse polder.
A bunker is also among the places described as worth visiting: it is across from the museum. Visitors go there accompanied by a museum employee. In addition to the coastal landscape, walking trails and mudflat experiences, local history and a guided museum visit can also shape your interests during your trip.
