De Koog: Beach, Dunes and Trails
Accommodation in De Koog
De Koog is a seaside resort: just one dune ridge separates the village from the beach and the sea, and you can walk straight to the beach from the centre. Its coastal location is a distinctive starting point for planning your trip. At the same time, there is more to explore than just the beach: De Nederlanden borders De Koog, while trails, wildlife and local history each reveal a different side of a stay here.
Dune meadows and trails
The dune meadows of De Nederlanden are rich in bird species. A wide path leads from De Nederlanden to De Slufter, and cycling is permitted along it. The landscape and the path offer different points of interest: the meadows are ideal for birdwatching, while cycling is specifically permitted on the wide path to De Slufter.
The Familiepad Alloo runs through dunes, woodland and agricultural land. The trail also has a birdwatching screen. Unlike the wide path from De Nederlanden to De Slufter, this trail focuses on changing landscape types and a place to watch birds; cycling is expressly permitted on the route from De Nederlanden.
Walking routes with different focuses
The Sommeltjespad is a 1.5-kilometre children’s walking trail in the woods near De Koog. Children can search for Sommeltjes there. The path is in the national park on Pelikaanweg, 1796 NT De Koog. Another way to see the village is on a walking tour of about 2 kilometres, which takes you through and around De Koog and explores the history of the seaside resort.
The routes differ both in length and in subject. The Sommeltjespad is 1.5 kilometres long and combines a children’s walking trail with searching for Sommeltjes in the woods. The walking tour of about 2 kilometres focuses on local history. These specific details make it easy to distinguish between a children’s trail and a historical walk through and around the village.
Wildlife and natural history museum
Ecomare is located in the heart of Duinen van Texel National Park. Visitors can see seals, birds, fish and other marine animals up close. Ecomare’s natural history museum covers the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the North Sea and Texel. Wildlife viewing and the museum have different focuses: one is about animals, while the other explores the Wadden Sea, the North Sea and the island.
Ecomare is easy to reach by bus, bicycle and car. If you are driving via Pontweg, take exit 13; Ecomare is also part of the cycling network. Check your specific travel plans before setting off, especially if you intend to use a particular mode of transport.
Church and summer market
The village’s history also has a specific landmark: the church in De Koog dates from 1719 and is designated a Rijksmonument, a Dutch national monument. The year and the heritage designation provide two different historical facts about the same building.
The Koger Dinsdagen is a summer market held on Tuesdays in July and August from 11 am to 5 pm. Since it is a seasonal event, check the dates for the relevant year before your trip. This way, your market visit remains tied to the actual dates of your stay.
