De Waal is Texel’s oldest village. Museum Waelstee is housed in a charming old farmhouse in the centre; several beautiful farmhouses and old residential buildings shape the streetscape along Hogereind. Other highlights include the Nederlands Hervormde kerk te De Waal and the Sommelpaadje. These offer different ways to discover De Waal: through its buildings, objects from everyday life on Texel, and routes through the island’s oldest part.

Village History Between the Church and Hogereind

The Nederlands Hervormde kerk te De Waal was completed in 1952; it was designed by the architectural firm J.W.H.C. Pot and J.F. Pot-Keegstra. Along Hogereind, the focus shifts from the individual church building to the streetscape: several beautiful farmhouses and old residential buildings shape the street. Anyone interested in village architecture can consider both scales side by side—the history of a named church building and the impression formed by several houses together.

Museums and the History of Everyday Life on Texel

Museum Waelstee is housed in a charming old farmhouse in the centre of De Waal, Texel’s oldest village. Its permanent exhibition includes authentic farm wagons and carriages, sledges, and old agricultural machines that were used on Texel. The objects represent two different aspects of everyday life: wagons, carriages and sledges relate to transport, while the machines bring the island’s agricultural work into focus. The old farmhouse situates Museum Waelstee in the centre of De Waal; the collection broadens the focus to objects that were used on Texel. This places local history and island life side by side as distinct but complementary themes.

The building complex of the Cultuurhistorisch Museum Texel includes a small stolp farmhouse, built using ship’s timber salvaged from shipwrecks off the coast of Texel. This detail connects a specific architectural form with a maritime history of materials, adding a different note from the vehicles and agricultural machines in the Waelstee collection.

Exploring on Foot or by Bicycle

De Waal is best explored on foot or by bicycle. The Sommelpaadje is a walking trail near De Waal that crosses Texel’s oldest part and runs through the Waalenburg polder. The route passes Tuunwallen and sheep pastures. It therefore connects a historical perspective with specific features of the landscape and differs in character from the streetscape along Hogereind: here, pastures and Tuunwallen take centre stage; there, farmhouses and old residential buildings. The Waddenpolder Waalenburg, the Netherlands’ first and largest meadow-bird reserve, is also located near De Waal. The reserve is a nature destination in its own right; the Sommelpaadje route through the polder offers an additional perspective on this landscape.
