Winkel: Culture, History and Bloemencorso
Accommodation in Winkel
Winkel combines cultural history with a recurring event and a distinctive landscape. Churches, the former town hall, Museum Spaansen and Bloemencorso offer different focal points for a trip. The Westfriese Omringdijk and a longer cycling route also provide specific points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Winkel, you can plan your stay around the themes that matter most to you.
Churches and Town Hall History
Since 1987, the Culturele Stichting Niedorp has organised concerts and exhibitions in the Lucaskerk in Winkel. The Lucaskerk has a Knipscheer organ. This links the church with both a specific musical instrument and cultural events. If a concert or exhibition is central to your trip, check the current programme when planning your dates.
The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Winkel is a hall church built in 1845 in the Waterstaats style. A hall church is a church building with a single, continuous main space. This means the architectural form adds a spatial dimension to the year it was built.
Several historical details are associated with the former town hall: an old sandstone inscription on the façade bears Winkel’s municipal coat of arms and the year 1599; the two oldest wooden beams date from 1615. Since 2023, the building has been protected as a municipal monument. The years therefore refer to different aspects: the inscription, the beams and the protected status.
Museum, Art and Bloemencorso
Museum Spaansen was established in February 1996 in the family’s former home, on the occasion of the Spaansen family’s 50th anniversary. It features an extensive photo collection and various tools and equipment used by the family business. The photographic collection and work equipment are thus presented as distinct elements.
Kunsttuin Winkel grew out of Ger’s great imagination and his craftsmanship and technical skills.
Bloemencorso Winkel takes place every year on the fourth Sunday in September. The day begins at 11:00 a.m. with a fair, a market featuring local produce and handmade crafts, and a food market. The parade begins at 2:00 p.m., led by the children’s parade with its creative constructions. The day is thus divided into an opening with the fair and markets, followed later by the parade. If you are planning your trip around Bloemencorso, check the programme for that year for the exact date and visitor information.
Dike Landscape and Cycling Route
Winkel is located on the Westfriese Omringdijk. This man-made dike is 126 kilometres long and is itself considered a monument. It is distinct from the “Het verhaal van Hollands Kroon West” cycling route, which is 66.59 kilometres long. The route follows old dikes, passes former harbour towns and crosses a landscape shaped by agricultural heritage. When planning, it is important not to confuse the two distances: 126 kilometres refers to the dike, while 66.59 kilometres refers to the cycling route. If you plan to cycle the route, check the latest distance information beforehand.
