Westerland on Wieringen offers a range of ways to shape your stay: architectural history, a landscape defined by ridges and water, birdwatching and water sports. The Nicolaaskerk and the Peilschaalhuisje represent different aspects of the town’s history. The Westerlander Koog is all about nature and bird species, while SUP School Westerland and Fiets Escape Wieringen offer different kinds of outdoor activities.

Church and landscape history

The Nicolaaskerk is a hall church with a three-sided apse. It was built onto the tower of an earlier church in 1828; the predecessor dates from around 1500. The church therefore reflects two distinct periods: the older tower and the later main structure. Just northwest of the Nicolaaskerk is the highest point of the Stuwwal Wieringen. It lies 13 metres above sea level, providing a tangible measure of elevation for the landscape around Westerland.

Historic roads also reflect the shape of the landscape. They run from Den Oever via Hippolytushoef to Westerland and were probably laid out as early as the early Middle Ages. Their winding course follows the higher parts of the landscape. The roads thus tell not only of an old connection between the towns, but also of how the routes adapt to the ridges. The cautious dating is just as much part of the context as the route described.

Water-level measurement and the MUZ Fietsroute

The Peilschaalhuisje Westerland dates from 1919. Rijkswaterstaat had it built to measure water levels. In addition to this clearly defined historic purpose, the building has cultural and architectural-historical value. It is also a stop on the MUZ Fietsroute – Wieringen & de Zuiderzeewerken.

The themed route takes visitors to buildings, landscape features and other monuments that tell the story of Wieringen’s ongoing transformation. The Peilschaalhuisje therefore represents more than water-level measurement: as a route stop, it is also part of a broader story about buildings and landscape. Anyone interested in the interplay of technical purpose, architecture and regional development will find a tangible point of interest here.

Walking and birdwatching in the Westerlander Koog

The Westerlander Koog is a nature area on Wieringen with marshes, reed beds and bodies of water. A walk there offers the chance to observe numerous bird species, including meadow birds, water birds and birds of prey. These different groups make for a broad range of birdwatching: the marshes and reed beds are as much a part of the landscape as the bodies of water. This lets you add nature watching to a stay in Westerland, rather than focusing solely on architectural history or water sports.

SUP lessons and an e-bike puzzle route

SUP School Westerland offers private lessons, group lessons, as well as various courses and training sessions. The location has ample parking, grassy areas for preparing equipment and sandy ground where you can stand for longer periods. There are also several sheltered coves on the Amstelmeer. Check in advance which courses are currently available, as availability may change.

Another activity is Fiets Escape Wieringen: on this outdoor experience, you follow a planned route on e-bikes using an app, while solving puzzles and codes along the way. The differences between the activities can help you choose: SUP School focuses on lessons and training, while Fiets Escape involves following the app route and solving challenges. During your stay in Westerland, you can decide whether you are more interested in water sports, nature watching or historic buildings.
