Kolhorn: Maritime Heritage and a Protected Townscape
Accommodation in Kolhorn
Kolhorn combines a maritime past with a protected townscape and several listed buildings. There are also opportunities for water-based activities and a seasonal market. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Kolhorn, these different highlights can help you narrow down your choice: perhaps you’re especially interested in the former fishing fleet, or perhaps you’d rather focus on historic buildings, walks, or a summer event.
Maritime History and the Water
The KH44 is the only surviving vessel from Kolhorn’s former, once extensive fishing fleet and is a Varend Monument. It therefore offers a clearly defined historical link to fishing. The Vaarroute rondje Kolhorn provides a different way to experience the water and is suitable for canoeing, SUP, and kayaking. The vessel and the route thus appeal to different interests: maritime history on the one hand, paddling on the other.
The recently established route has three jetties where you can take short breaks. This is a practical detail when planning a paddling trip; check local conditions before setting off. Jachthaven Kolhorn has also received an award: in 2026, it was awarded the international Blue Flag environmental distinction. The award recognizes a clean, safe, and sustainable marina; its status is assessed annually.
Townscape and Monuments
Kolhorn’s protected townscape is shaped by the interplay of the dike, water, streets, paths, and the buildings alongside them. The Westfriesedijk in Kolhorn is a provincial monument. These features draw attention both to the town’s spatial layout and to the status of a specifically named monument.
Five historic, black-tarred wooden sheds from the 19th century along the dike in Kolhorn are national monuments (Rijksmonumenten). Their age, material, and color provide further clues for identifying these buildings.
Laurenskerk
Laurenskerk is also a national monument (Rijksmonument) and is used for concerts, exhibitions, and weddings. Here, monument status goes hand in hand with several specific uses. If you’re considering cultural activities as part of your trip, the church is a distinct part of Kolhorn’s cultural profile.
Tower at Kerkepad 3
The tower of the monument at Kerkepad 3 has a simple, eight-sided spire. Its bell, cast in 1418 by Willam Butendiic, measures 107 centimeters in diameter; the mechanical clockwork dates from around 1780. The dates refer to different parts: the casting of the bell and the clockwork. The tower thus brings together its form, craftsmanship, and several historical dates.
Walks and a Seasonal Event
There are three themed walks in Kolhorn. A digital edition is available free of charge, or you can buy a printed edition for a small fee. Check local availability before your visit. Guided walks are currently offered for groups of four or more. If you’re planning a guided walk for a group, this minimum size is important; the themed walks, by contrast, concern the edition and its availability.
The Kolhorn Night Market takes place on three summer evenings each year as an evening market and winds through the protected old town center. If you’re planning your trip around the market, check the dates for the relevant year in advance. That way, you can plan your trip around this seasonal event.
