Hippolytushoef brings together different periods of architecture and cultural themes: the Hippolytuskerk dates from the 13th century, the former post office with the director’s residence was built in 1919, and the Heidense Kapel was not built until 2016. There are also memorial sites, swimming, a marked route and mudflat experiences on Wieringen. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose the focus of your stay based on whether architectural history, events or activities involving water and mudflats are of particular interest to you.

Churches and events

The Hippolytuskerk is in the centre of Hippolytushoef and dates from the 13th century. Events such as classical concerts are held regularly in the church; specific dates vary. If you would like to include a concert in your plans, check the event date. The Heidense Kapel offers a different architectural accent: it was built in 2016 and features Romanesque style elements. This makes it possible to compare two periods of construction and their distinct architectural features without mistaking the newer chapel for a medieval building.

Architectural history and farmsteads

The former post office with the director’s residence was built in 1919 to a design by the architect Joseph Crouwel. Its simple Expressionist style features elements of the Amsterdam School. The former patronage building was constructed around 1906 as part of the Roman Catholic church complex. The two buildings thus tell of different functions and phases of construction, while the Oosterklief 6 farmstead represents an agricultural building type: it is a Wieringen-type farm with living quarters and a stable area, as well as a tall stolp barn. These structures were built in 1883. For a cultural and historical overview, you can compare the church complex, public building and farmstead.

Memorial sites and traditions

A war memorial to resistance fighter Marten Snoodijk stands in the Zandburen cemetery in Hippolytushoef. Made of natural stone, it is shaped like the bridge at Van Ewijcksluis on the Korte Afsluitdijk. The details about the person, material and shape give the memorial a specific historical connection. Fairs are also part of local tradition and are still held. Their dates vary from year to year, so bear this in mind if a fair is important to your travel plans.

Route, swimming and mudflats

The Wierdijkroute starts and ends in Hippolytushoef. Blue arrows mark the route in both directions. Check for current route updates before setting out. Zwembad De Venne offers swimming lessons, special events and recreational swimming. It has a heated main pool and a separate heated pool for toddlers. It is a good idea to check the current schedule before your visit; the pools and activities differ, as do the reasons for visiting.

De Groot Recreatie organises various mudflat walks from Noord-Holland on the former island of Wieringen, in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The mudflat experience includes a boat trip across the Wadden Sea; specific packages may vary. The combination of a walk and a boat trip sets this experience apart from the Wierdijkroute in Hippolytushoef. If you are considering both activities, plan them as separate outings and check the relevant information in advance.

Museum and local produce

The Wieringer Eilandmuseum is located on the Zuiderzee island of Wieringen, at the farmstead of its last resident and owner, Jan Lont. Arrangements for walks, cycling tours, boat trips or rides are offered in collaboration with other organisations; specific options may vary. Before visiting, check the opening arrangements and, if interested, the available packages.

At IJs- en zuivelboerderij De Wieringer, visitors can select dairy products themselves and use a picnic area. The range includes ice cream, yoghurt, fresh milk, quark, jam, fruit yoghurt and syrup, among other products. The availability of individual products may vary, so it is a good idea to check the farm’s arrangements before travelling. This allows cultural themes, activities and regional produce to be considered as distinct focuses for your stay.
