Achtmaal combines cultural and historical landmarks with a variety of opportunities for hiking and cycling. When planning a stay, you can choose whether to focus on a named route, particular landscapes or historical themes. Highlights range from architectural history and historic paths to landscapes that can be explored on foot.

Church and Estate

Sint Corneliuskerk is a three-aisled hall church with a front tower. It was built in 1863 in the traditional Waterstaat style and extended with a new choir in 1923–1924. This clearly dates two building phases: the construction of the church and the later choir extension. If you are interested in architecture, you will find specific details here about the building type, style and development of the structure.

Wallsteijn Estate was laid out around 1800 by Frederik van de Wall, who was the schout of Zundert. The date and the named attribution give the estate its own historical connection among the themes associated with Achtmaal.

Hiking Through Heathland and Cultural Landscapes

Oude Buisse Heide lies between Achtmaal and Schijf. There, you can hike through old forests and along meadows, fields, waterways and farmsteads. De Reten offers a distinct landscape focus: the area includes grassland, fields and heathland, and connects Oude Buisse Heide with De Moeren Estate. You can also hike across heathland and through new nature areas in De Reten. With a little luck, you may spot a smooth snake in the wet heathland.

The named hiking trails can be chosen based on different features. The Wallsteijnroute is a 2.5-kilometre circular walking trail. The Koepelroute is a hiking trail between Schijf, Achtmaal and Zundert. For the Wallsteijnroute, the specific points of reference are its length and circular route; for the Koepelroute, it is the connection between the three places. This lets you decide whether you prefer a numbered circular route or a route linking several named places.

Historic Paths and Contemporary History

The Kerkepad follows the historic path Henriette Roland Holst always took on her way to the church in Achtmaal. The Gedichtenroute passes an old tea pavilion dating from 1840, where Roland Holst used to drink tea with her guests. The two routes offer different historical perspectives: one focuses on a path to the church, the other on the former use of a tea pavilion.

The Achtmaal Military History Museum is primarily dedicated to the liberators of the municipality of Zundert, including the American 104th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Timberwolves.” Other topics include the prelude to the Second World War, the May Days of 1940 and the occupation. The subject matter therefore covers the liberation, the preceding period and the years of occupation.

For a cycling route, the Timberwolves-Fietsroute Zuid is another option: it is 52 kilometres long and starts at the Stichting Historisch Militair Museum in Achtmaal. The route length and starting point give you two specific points of reference for planning. Along with the hiking trails, the route offers another way to explore what Achtmaal has to offer.
