Oss can be explored through many different facets: museums and buildings tell the story of the town, while nature areas and routes take you through a variety of landscapes. There is plenty to choose from when planning your visit – from a short tour of the town centre to a 67-kilometre cycle route through the municipality of Oss.

Nature Areas and Landscapes

Herperduin lies between Oss and Herpen and covers about 400 hectares. Forests, heathland, fens and areas of windblown sand define the landscape. De Maashorst offers a different setting: Oss lies on the edge of this nature area, where you can take long walks and cycle through heathland and past gravel pits. Herds of wild animals and badger setts are also among its distinctive features.

Keent is a nature area in a former branch of the River Meuse. You can explore its floodplains and unpaved paths. Throughout the year, more than 100 Tauros cattle help increase biodiversity through natural grazing and keep the vegetation short. Herperduin, De Maashorst and Keent therefore offer contrasting landscapes, from forests and heathland to river scenery and open floodplains.

Museums, Buildings and Local History

At the Jan Cunen Museum, 19th-century Dutch art and contemporary art are presented alongside the history of Oss, which is the museum’s central focus. It is housed in the listed Villa Constance. Villa Curiossa tells the town’s story in a different way, displaying museum-quality masterpieces and special objects belonging to residents of Oss.

The Grote Kerk Oss, officially known as De Onze Lieve Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen Kerk, was built between 1857 and 1859 and listed as a Rijksmonument in 1976. Its 58-metre-high tower can be climbed in a group with a guide from the Vrienden van de Grote Kerk. As guided visits may change, check the current arrangements before your visit.

Industrial history and art in public spaces also shape the town. The Farmacie mural on the factory wall of Organon in Oss is about 12 metres high and 65 metres wide. Bergoss grew from a cotton-wool factory founded in 1856 into a carpet factory; the Bergoss office can be seen at the Bergoss site. The Titus Brandsma monument was created by Theo van der Nahmer and installed in 1957 in front of Titus Brandsma Lyceum.

Walks and Cycle Routes

For a themed walk through the town, try “De Bende van Oss”. This three-kilometre town walk starts at Kruisstraat 36 and explores the links between Oss’s industrial dependence and unemployment, poverty and crime. Oss also offers cultural town walks with guided tours that share local history through notable places, anecdotes and stories.

Shorter routes also vary in theme and length: the archaeological story trail in the centre of Oss is 2.3 kilometres long. Check its availability before travelling. The “Een Rondje Oss” walking route covers 4.5 kilometres; as route documents may be revised, it is worth checking the latest route information. These distances help you compare routes without implying a walking time.

For a longer cycle ride, the Molenfietstocht in the municipality of Oss is a distinct option: it is 67 kilometres long and follows cycle junctions past ten mills. Other walks and cycle routes in Oss may take you through sandy forests, along the Meuse dike, across floodplains and through open polders. The landscape you experience depends on the route you choose.

Another visit depends on a specific event: visitors to the ABC civil defence bunker tour go down to the basement in groups with a guide from the Maasland Gilde. Check in advance whether a suitable tour is taking place.

Plan Your Journey

Oss has three railway stations and good bus connections. Check the timetables separately for your specific journey. This lets you coordinate your travel with planned museum visits, walks or cycle routes.
