When choosing a travel destination, architectural history, Roman traces and trails can be deciding factors. Maren-Kessel offers a range of themes: churches and a listed monument in the village, Roman artefacts on Kerkplein, and trails and landscapes in the village and its surroundings. If you are looking for a hotel in Maren-Kessel, these highlights can help you plan your trip around your own interests.

Churches and architectural history

After the war, Maren-Kessel was planned as a new residential area between the older village centres of Maren to the west and Kessel to the east. The Sint-Lambertuskerk was built in this area in the early 1950s. It has twenty stained-glass windows by Huib de Corti. They depict, among other things, the seven sacraments and the seven virtues—a specific religious iconographic programme in the interior.

De Pastorije is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) built in 1873 in the Neo-Gothic style. An old church cemetery adjoins the grounds, and a small Marian chapel stands beside it. Together with the Sint-Lambertuskerk, these buildings from different periods shape the village: De Pastorije dates from the 19th century, while the church was built after the war. The house and garden of De Pastorije are regularly opened to the public, including on Open Monumentendag and Open Kerkendag. Dates may vary; check event details if you are planning your visit around them.

Roman traces and historic sites

Stones from the Roman temple are on display in a publicly accessible setting on Kerkplein in Maren-Kessel. Fragments of a Roman temple found in the area around Maren-Kessel were later reused in a Roman fort. An online 3D reconstruction lets you view the Roman temple stones from all sides. Roman history can therefore be encountered here in different forms: as a visible display on Kerkplein, as an archaeological context and as a digital viewing experience.

Kessel also has historic traces. The former fortified castle Het Hof was built there in the course of the 14th century and demolished in 1801. Its name and the surrounding moat are still evident. The historic network of paths along the Maas also includes features in Maren-Kessel; they are owned by the municipality of Oss. These sites and paths provide different spatial and temporal points of reference for the history of the village.

Hiking and cycling routes

The “Rondje Lith - Maren” walking route is about 13 kilometres long and passes through Kessel, Maren and Maren-Kessel. It follows paved roads and paths almost all the way. Both the approximate route length and the predominantly paved surface are useful details for planning your outing. Kerkpad offers a different way to explore the history of the routes: it was restored as part of the Lithse padenplan and still bears the historic name “den heiligen gang”.

The “Tempels langs de Maas” cycling route also runs through the area around Maren-Kessel. It forms a circular route through Oss and neighbouring municipalities. At around 16 stops, signposts, information boards and audio silhouettes provide information about the Roman history of each location. Check that the app is available before setting out. The walking route and the circular cycling route differ both in how you travel and in their focus: one centres on a route through several villages, while the other presents Roman history along the stops.

The surrounding landscape

From the Kesselse dijk, you can enjoy views of the water and nature of the Lithse Ham. The Soldatenwiel is also located near Maren-Kessel: a deep body of water formed in 1795 after a dike breach. The Kesselse dijk offers a landscape view, while the Soldatenwiel is defined above all by the story of its origins. Together with the churches, Roman-themed sites and trails, these places offer different points of interest to help you plan your stay.
