Accommodation in Berghem
If you’re looking for a hotel in Berghem, you can plan your trip around the village’s varied attractions: church architecture and history, a public garden, walking, theatre or motorsport. Specific construction dates, route details and programme items give you a starting point for deciding what interests you during your stay.
Churches and architectural history
The larger Willibrorduskerk in Berghem was built in 1524. A substantial tower was added in 1531, and its lower section remains today. The tower served as a meeting place for the aldermen and as the secretary’s office; in wartime, it was used as a defensive tower. Its history therefore encompasses municipal and administrative as well as military functions.
The St.-Willibrorduskerk was built from 1900 to 1903 to plans by W. van Aalst, next to the tower of the late Gothic parish church. The building is a three-aisled cross basilica in the Neo-Gothic style. The Kempische Langgiebelboerderij also offers a specific glimpse into architectural history: its residential section was built in 1792 and its farm section in 1796. The respective dates distinguish the construction phases of the two parts of the building.
Pastorietuin and historic trees
Behind the Willibrorduskerk lies Pastorietuin Berghem, which serves as a public park. Trees planted when the former rectory garden was laid out in 1903 still stand there. The park’s current public use thus connects an accessible public space with a lasting link to its earlier garden design. If you’re interested in the history of the village, the trees add another historical perspective to the church buildings.
Walking through the village and countryside
The 11.7-kilometre Ommetje Berghem route leads through the village and along the open polder landscape and the forests of Herperduin. Its length is a useful point of reference for planning your walk. The route follows the walking junction network in its entirety. In Herperduin, almost all paths are unpaved; this refers to the paths there, not to the entire route as a whole. As surfaces and signage may change, check the route page before setting out.
Theatre and events
Openluchttheater Hoessenbosch is set in a wooded area on the edge of Berghem. Its programme includes theatre performances, cabaret, music, films and events. If you’d like to plan your trip around a particular show, the schedule is the right reference for your planning. The programme changes over time, so check the dates for your chosen period.
Motorsport and cycling route
The outdoor race track at Circuit Park Berghem is 1,300 metres long and 8 metres wide. The Arrive-&-Drive programme includes two-hour endurance races with Kombikart Eco karts. The measurements describe the track, while the duration and kart type describe the race format. If motorsport is one of the reasons for your visit, check the event dates before planning your trip.
A cycling route for visiting the sights shown is available from the local heritage association “Berchs Heem” for a small fee. Before planning, check whether the route is currently available. By comparison, the Ommetje Berghem is described as a walking route with a specified length and sections through different landscapes. The two options therefore differ in how you travel and in the route details available.
