Meterik combines windmill history with protected buildings and trails through fields and forests. If you are planning a stay, you can explore the village from different perspectives: the windmill and the church tell the story of its architectural history, while the described trails offer specific distances and landscape features. This lets you choose your focus based on whether you are more interested in architecture or walking and cycling routes.

Windmill and cycling routes

The “Eendracht Maakt Macht” windmill was built in Meterik in 1899. Volunteer millers operate it regularly. If the windmill’s operating schedule is relevant to your travel plans, check the latest information in advance.

An article from August 2023 describes the 33-kilometre Fietsroute De Locht. It follows farm tracks and country roads, passing the windmill in Meterik. Before planning your trip, check whether the route is currently available. The windmill thus brings together two topics you can consider when making your choice: a building with a history dating back to the 19th century and a described cycling tour that passes it.

Walking trails and landscape

The Ommetje Schadijkerpad Meterik is an 8-kilometre marked walking trail. It runs alongside a stream and passes through fields and forests. Check the current trail markers before setting out. The distances can help you choose the right format: here, an 8-kilometre walk and a 33-kilometre cycling tour are presented side by side. This lets you take the length of your planned tour into account.

The Schadijkerpad runs alongside the Kabroeksebeek and through an agricultural area that has been farmed for centuries. The Kabroekse Beek is 9 kilometres long; a wide variety of flora and fauna has developed in and around the stream in recent years. Together, the trail, watercourse and agricultural landscape offer a tangible connection with nature. There are several benches and seating areas along the Boswachterspad Schadijkse bossen. If you would like to plan breaks during a walk, these places to sit provide a practical point of reference along the trail.

Church and protected village centre

The R.K. Church of H. Joannes Evangelist is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site). Its architectural history comprises two stages: a hall church was built between 1899 and 1900; in 1907, it was converted into a neo-Gothic cross church. The change in terminology makes the transformation of its architectural form clear and gives the church a precisely dated history.

Meterik’s old village centre is also protected: it lies at the intersection of Schadijkerweg and Sint Jansstraat/Crommentuijnstraat and is designated as a protected villagescape. The former “Theresia” convent was built around 1925 and is a defining feature of Meterik. Together, these features represent different facets of the area’s built heritage: the development of a church building, a protected village centre and a former convent with an approximate construction date.
