Discover Broekhuizenvorst: buildings and cycling routes
Accommodation in Broekhuizenvorst
Broekhuizenvorst combines historic buildings with cycling routes through the Maas landscape. Kasteel Oyen, the Heilige Naam Jezuskerk and the St. Annakapelletje represent distinct architectural forms and history; the cycling routes add route details and scenery to the picture. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on individual buildings or a bike ride.
Historic architectural forms
Kasteel Oyen is a late-medieval castle surrounded by a moat. The main castle has a U-shaped floor plan, with an annex attached to it. The complex also includes a 17th-century residential building with three interconnected wings beneath gabled and hipped roofs. The complex as a whole is mostly surrounded by a moat. These features distinguish the floor plan, building sections and roof design: the U-shape applies to the main castle, while the wings describe the residential building. A gabled roof has two sloping roof surfaces; on a hipped roof, the gable ends are sloped too. This makes it possible to distinguish the roof types without confusing them with the floor plan.
The St. Annakapelletje offers a different architectural accent: the chapel is plastered, has a three-sided apse and a curved façade. The three-sided apse describes the polygonal end of a building, while the curved façade refers to the outline of its front. This building makes it possible to distinguish the shape of the end from the design of the façade.
Church and remembrance
The church in Broekhuizenvorst was first mentioned in 1214, when it was known as Salvatorkerk or H. Verlosserkerk. The Heilige Naam Jezuskerk is a listed national monument because of its tower, nave and choir. It also houses a memorial to Mgr. Schraven and his companions, the Chinese martyrs. Thus, the church’s history brings together an early recorded name and a specifically designated place of remembrance.
Cycling routes and the Maas landscape
The Ode aan de Maas Lomm–Blitterswijck cycling route is 36 kilometres long and can be ridden between April and October. On its western side, it passes through Lottum, Broekhuizen, Broekhuizenvorst, Ooyen and Blitterswijck. It follows the junction network and is fully included in the Archeo Route Limburg 2.0 app. As route details, seasonal information and app listings may be updated, it is worth checking the latest route information before setting off.
The Peel en Maasvallei cycling route has a different focus. Between Geijsteren and Broekhuizenvorst, it passes through the attractive terraced landscape of the Maas, with villages, isolated farms, meadows and orchards. Near Broekhuizenvorst, the cover sand reaches close to the Maas. If you mainly want to compare a stated distance and a time window, Ode aan de Maas provides that information; Peel en Maasvallei focuses on the landscape and Maas terraces.
