Oost Gelre: Raised Bog and Fortress History
Accommodation in Oost Gelre
Oost Gelre can be explored through its varied landscapes and experiences: fields and meadows alternate with streams, small patches of woodland, villages and scattered farmsteads. There is also a living raised bog, trails through natural and park landscapes, and the history of Groenlo. You can combine nature, regional culture and historical themes in one stay.
Raised Bog, Trails and Nature
Vragenderveen is a 110-hectare, still-living raised bog. Visitors can walk through its freely accessible outer zone or join a guided tour of the bog; the availability of walks and tours may vary. The Vragenderveen visitor centre uses photographs and maps to explain the bog, its formation and conservation measures. It also covers common and rare birds, butterflies and plants found in the bog.
At Natuurpark de Leemputten, visitors can go pedal boating and take a walk along a quiet woodland path. Both activities depend on operational availability.
Exploring the Area Around Groenlo
Groenlo offers cycling and walking routes along its fortifications, through parkland with hedgerows and groups of trees, along church paths and through surrounding villages. When walking, you can use the junction network to choose your own distance. A clearly measured cycling option is the 22-kilometre Marveld–Zwillbrock route, which runs from the fortified town of Groenlo to Natuurpark de Leemputten. Routes and conditions may change; check the current route when making specific plans.
History and Culture
Parts of the town moat, rampart, a ravelin and the town wall have been preserved in Groenlo as historic fortifications. The Nationaal Museum Tachtigjarige Oorlog is housed in a restored 15th-century church. It brings the history of the Eighty Years’ War to life in an engaging, interactive way and from multiple perspectives.
Traces of the past can also be found on the grounds of Erve Kots: among other things, a Frankish burial ground and a post-built farmhouse with a ditch were discovered there. The Achterhoeks Openluchtmuseum presents the former farming life of the Achterhoek and shows how farmers once lived and worked. Its audio tour covers old buildings, machinery, crafts and legends from the Achterhoek. It is available in Dutch, German and Achterhoeks; tour formats may change.
During the Slag om Grolle, Groenlo becomes a lively open-air museum for three days, with historic markets, music, crafts and theatre. Battles are reenacted twice a day on the Schootsveld during the event. If this event is to have a fixed place in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
Local Experiences and Visit Planning
The 2026 visitor menu at Brouwersnös lists a tasting board with four beers; the selection may change.
Next to the Nationaal Museum Tachtigjarige Oorlog is the De Wheme car park, with four charging stations for electric cars. Parking and charging facilities may change. The museum has a lift, seating, an accessible toilet and written transcripts of the audio texts for visitors with hearing impairments. If you rely on any of these facilities, check their current availability before your visit.
