Vragender brings together nature, historic sites and outdoor activities as different travel interests. These include Vragenderveen, the former Sint Jacobskapel with its later redevelopment, a grain mill that is still in operation, and walking and cycling routes. The Sint-Antonius van Paduakerk is also a landmark in the village. The following details will help you decide whether to focus on a guided visit to the nature reserve, chapel history or active outdoor routes. If you are planning a stay, you can then decide whether to focus on the nature visit, local history or one of the route options.

Vragenderveen and guided access

Together with the adjoining Meddosche Veen, Corlese Veen and Korenburgerveen, Vragenderveen forms one of the few remaining active raised bog areas in the Netherlands. There is an important access rule for visitors: Vragenderveen can only be visited with a qualified guide. Contact the organizer before you travel so you can factor the guided visit into your plans.

Chapel site and historic traces

The Sint Jacobskapel has not been used since 1650 and fell into ruin. Paths, the stone outline of the original chapel, a flower bed with woodland plants and new information panels have been added to the site; the redevelopment was completed in 2024. The two dates help put the history in context: 1650 marks the end of its use, and 2024 the completion of the site’s redevelopment.

Documentary reference

As a separate historical record, a surviving deed of endowment dated 23 April 1444 states that Herman Stemerdink transferred four plots of land near the Leeferinck estate to the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kapel for the construction of a chapel. It links a precise date with a named person, the location of the land and the purpose of the construction.

Mill and church in the village landscape

De Vier Winden is a working grain mill and a Rijksmonument in Vragender. Two aspects come together here: the mill is still operating and it has listed-monument status. Unlike the former Sint Jacobskapel, the focus is therefore not solely on historic ruins. The Sint-Antonius van Paduakerk is also a landmark in Vragender, adding another distinctive feature to the village landscape.

Walking and cycling

The Tradvatpad is a sporty walking and exercise trail of about five kilometres, with various exercises along the way. TOP Beneman is starting point 36 on the local walking-route network, and you can plan routes using the Achterhoek route planner. The difference is clear: the Tradvatpad combines an approximate distance and exercises in a sporty trail, while TOP Beneman is focused on putting together walking routes.

Cyclists can reach cycle junctions 38, 41, 80 and 86, as well as various themed cycling routes, from TOP Beneman. Vragender is also on the “Karakteristieke Kerkdorpen rondom Lichtenvoorde” cycling route. If you are looking for a cycling route specifically associated with Vragender, this gives you a different point of reference from the junctions and themed routes starting at TOP Beneman.
