Lievelde offers several focal points for planning a stay: rural hiking trails, remembrance and historical working life appeal to different interests. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether a museum visit, a memorial site or a route should shape your stay. The trails differ not only in their destinations, but also in their courses.

Historical insights

The Achterhoeks Openluchtmuseum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; during the winter months, it closes at 4:00 pm. Bear the earlier closing time in mind when visiting in winter, and check the opening hours before you travel.

There are two farmhouses on the grounds: Boerderij Kots and a Los Hoes. Both illustrate how the farming population lived and worked in close connection with nature. The museum also includes a wood sawmill dating from 1920, powered by an electric motor. The farmhouses and the sawmill thus show different aspects of rural work: farming life and a technical facility with electric power. Visitors interested in everyday history can explore these topics side by side during a museum visit.

Memorial sites and hiking trails

The memorial monument in Lievelde stands beside the intersection of Lievelderweg and Hamalandweg. Made of Corten steel, it depicts a life-size branch with a leaf. The monument commemorates Jewish forced labourers who were deployed at this labour camp. The intersection provides a specific landmark for the memorial site; the monument’s form and material accompany its clearly stated historical purpose.

The defensive fortification known as the English Schans lies in the surrounding area, between Lievelde and Vragender on Schansweg. It is a remnant of the encirclement line around Groenlo. Government troops under Frederik Hendrik built it in the summer of 1627 during the Eighty Years’ War. From a lookout tower, visitors can view the reconstructed English Schans.

The Erve-Kots hiking route is around 7 kilometres long, starts at TOP Erve Kots and follows quiet roads and paths through the rural area of Lievelde. It leads to the historic viewpoint at the English Schans. The route thus combines a named starting point and an approximate distance with a destination whose history reaches back to the Eighty Years’ War.

Another hike is De Besselinkschans. It follows a circular route through the village centres of Vragender, Lievelde and Lichtenvoorde. There are therefore different types of routes to choose from: the Erve-Kots hiking route includes a start at the TOP and a journey through rural areas, while the three village centres define the circular route of De Besselinkschans. The Erve-Kots hiking route is also the route described as connecting to the historic viewpoint.
