Heumen: Fen landscapes, the Maas and historic trails
Accommodation in Heumen
Fens, forests, heathland and floodplains shape the landscape of Heumen. The town lies on the Maas, just south of Nijmegen and on the border with Brabant and Limburg. The surrounding area includes a moraine landscape dating from the penultimate ice age. Visitors to Heumen can explore nature trails, historical sites and cultural attractions.
Fens and trails through the landscape
The Overasseltse en Hatertse Vennen cover 520 hectares and include around twenty fen lakes. They formed approximately 10,000 years ago through the action of the Maas and Waal rivers. In summer, the heathland turns purple along the fen hiking trail. The route runs for 6.5 kilometres through the fen area and is marked with yellow wooden posts. As markers can change, check them on site if needed; you should also check the trail conditions before setting off.
At 6.5 kilometres, the Vennenroute is the shorter of the two routes described here and offers an alternative to the 8.8-kilometre blue route of the Heerlijkheden van Overasselt. This historic walk passes through Overasselt and by a 15th-century chapel associated with the Sint-Walrick monastery. When choosing a route, you can take into account not only its length but also its focus: fen landscapes on the one hand, historic sites on the other.
Other trails reveal different sides of the area. The Ommetje Bos en Kuil passes through the forests of Heumensoord, along the Maas-Waal Canal and over an ancient Roman road. The long Ommetje Heumen runs through and around the village of Heumen, over dikes and along the Maas; it can be extended through the Heumens Bos and along the Maas-Waal Canal. Heumen also has a variety of hiking and cycling routes, as well as numerous bridleways.
The partly paved Heumensoord family trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs and passes the Speelkuil. Blue arrows mark the route. As maintenance or route changes may affect accessibility, check the trail conditions before your visit.
Discover culture and history
The Sint Walrick ruin, a medieval chapel, lies along the fen hiking trail. Next to Sint Walrick stands the Koortsboom. According to local folklore, a piece of cloth hung there could cure illness. This belief is part of the site's heritage, not a medical recommendation.
The memory of the Second World War is also present at various sites. The war memorial in Heumen commemorates those killed who were buried in 1944 at the temporary military cemetery on the Bergzicht estate in Heumen. A memorial behind the brewery in Molenhoek commemorates a temporary cemetery for 836 military personnel and air force members from the United States and the United Kingdom. The cemetery was about 300 metres from the memorial and was closed in May 1948.
At the bridge in Heumen, the Liberation Route Heumen & Mook includes an audio point. Visitors can listen on their smartphones to the story of the capture. In Overasselt, a Second World War walking route explores local wartime history and is connected thematically to Operation Market Garden.
The Jac Maris Atelier Museum is one of the few studio museums in the Netherlands. The sculptor Jac Maris (1900–1996) lived in the Marishuis for 70 years. The De Lage Hof Agricultural Museum offers a different perspective on the region's past: it is housed in a monumental farmstead, and its distinctive barns contain old machinery and tools used by farmers and craftspeople.
Mills, regional produce and art
The Joannusmolen is a grain mill built by Joannus Jetten in 1894. It has been used to grind organic grain since 1982. You can visit when the mill is operating or by arrangement with the volunteer miller. The history of the Molen Zeldenrust is also linked to a change of location: after being dismantled, it was moved to the Oude Kleefsebaan and rebuilt there in 1978.
You can sample local produce in Heumen. If you want to visit a specific producer, check the details with that supplier separately. The Kunstroute Heumen takes place in Malden, Heumen and Overasselt. Its 2026 edition was the ninth and invited visitors to explore the gardens and studios of participating artists.
If you are looking for a hotel in Heumen, it is best to first decide which themes you want to shape your stay: fens and hiking trails, art and mills, or the history of the Maas region. This way, you can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most.
