Lingewaard: River Landscapes, Routes and History
Accommodation in Lingewaard
The Waal and Nederrijn rivers enclose Lingewaard in the eastern part of the Gelderland river region. Floodplains, orchards, the Linge and the Gendtse Polder are part of its green and scenic heritage. The Klompenpad in Ressen is also part of this landscape. This gives you several starting points for your trip: river landscapes and polders, routes on foot and by bike, and places that reveal local history. You can discover Lingewaard through nature, outdoor activities and culture without limiting your stay to a single theme.
On foot: from short walks to the Zeegsepad
There are several specific distance figures for walking routes. A report from April 2025 mentions a completed network of walking routes measuring just under 150 kilometres; route coverage may change. The listed short walks in Park Lingezegen range from 1.5 to 8 kilometres. The 11-kilometre Zeegsepad runs through the rural surroundings of Ressen and Lent. This lets you compare shorter walks in the park with the longer, clearly measured Zeegsepad and factor the distance into your daily plans. You can also hike the Klompenpaden in Lingewaard.
Cycling along the water
The Rondje Lingewaard is a 31.5-kilometre circular cycling route through the municipality that follows the cycle junction network. You can also cycle along the Waal, the Pannerdensch Kanaal and the Linge. The circular route has a stated total distance, while the information about the waterways highlights their scenic setting. Both offer different starting points if you would like to include cycling in your trip plans.
Historical traces and World Heritage
The Oude Postweg on the Zeegsepad is a surviving section of the former centuries-old postal road between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The Kasteelterrein Ressen, also known as Bos Idylle, preserves reconstructed foundation outlines of Huis te Ressen. The church in Ressen is considered one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands. These places represent different aspects of history: a former transport link, visible foundation outlines and a church with a special place in history.
In Lingewaard, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and Roman Limes meet; both have been World Heritage Sites since 2021. Fort Pannerden is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The fort’s roof offers views over the Waal, the Rhine and the Pannerdensch Kanaal. The view brings together several notable names in the river landscape at a place that is also part of a World Heritage Site.
Kasteel Doornenburg is a medieval castle with an upper and a lower bailey connected by a wooden bridge. The first floor houses an exhibition about the castle’s role during a turbulent period in history. If your trip plans include buildings and their history, the castle and exhibition add another cultural focus to the routes and landscapes.
Visits and local experiences
At Fort Pannerden, the Grachtentour includes a visit to one of seven casemates or bunkers. Fortverhalen is a self-guided tour through the tunnel system. The lower bailey of Kasteel Doornenburg and the walking trail around the castle are open to visitors free of charge year-round. Check access arrangements before your trip if you plan to visit the interior.
Every year on June 29, the Huissense Gilden reenact the siege and relief of Huissen. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the programme for the relevant year before travelling. De Woerdt offers apple-picking days, tastings, outings and workshops; check specific dates and availability in advance. The Fruitbedrijf en Landgoedwinkel De Woerdt also sells apples, pears, cherries, sour cherries and plums.
The Streekmuseum Lingewaard makes local heritage accessible through publications and work with public authorities to protect it; there is no physical museum. Alongside the historic sites, publications and efforts to preserve local heritage also provide ways to explore the region’s history.
