Explore Barneveld’s hiking trails, woodland and heathland landscapes, and diverse museums. A hike of just under 3.5 kilometres is one option, alongside longer routes; there are also historic buildings, water activities and varied landscapes. You can combine nature and culture to suit your own interests.

Heathland, Forests and Open Landscapes

Kootwijk lies between extensive heathland and the largest active shifting sand dunes in Western Europe. The Kootwijkerzand is accessible year-round between sunrise and sunset. Rules may change for nature conservation or safety reasons; check the latest information before your visit. In ’t Sol, mixed woodland alternates with a park-like area, a former arboretum, heathland and a former sand quarry. You can walk, cycle and observe wildlife there; ravens also nest in the area.

Wilbrinkbos is a wooded estate with a manor house, hedgerows, heathland, ponds and small peat lakes. It lies along the Hessenweg, an old trading route to Germany. One of the lakes in the area is home to the rare great crested newt. West of Barneveld is the estate complex of Klein Bylaer, Kallenbroek and Groot Otelaar: streams run through a wet landscape that can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Near Garderen, the Veluwe forests at Wilde Kamp and Bergsham offer opportunities for walking and cycling. Ancient burial mounds and former enclosed plots are visible there; red deer and wild boar are also present. The Klompenpad Het Paradijspad offers good opportunities to observe birds and deer, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The walk through Barneveld is just under 3.5 kilometres long and starts at the Oranjerie on the De Schaffelaar estate. The present-day Schaffelaar House dates from 1852. Its English Gothic Revival design is considered almost unique in the Netherlands. Another walking route covers 26 kilometres through and around Barneveld.

Het Paradijspad is ten kilometres long and leads through the outskirts of Barneveld, across meadows and estates, and along streams, heathland and woodland. This longer route offers different scenery from the shorter walk through town. The 20-kilometre Doortraproute Barneveld follows wide paths, quiet roads and clear junctions. A connecting cycling route through the village centres of Barneveld is 75 kilometres long. Routes and conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Those exploring the area by bicycle can also plan a stop at the fully restored Puurveense Molen in Kootwijkerbroek. The Pad van Zus walking trail in Garderen passes prehistoric burial mounds. Both examples show how landscape and history come together along the way, without every route having the same focus.

Museums and Architectural History

In central Barneveld, opposite the church, Museum Nairac has been housed in a former 17th-century brewery since 1975. The building itself therefore tells an older story of the town. The Nederlands Pluimveemuseum has almost 3,500 square metres of exhibition space and offers an original poultry auction as a visitor experience.

The Oude Ambachten & Speelgoed Museum in Terschuur features 160 crafts, shops and fully equipped workshops. The collection mainly presents Dutch history from around 1910 to 1970. Several traditional crafts are demonstrated live each week; the demonstrations may vary. The museum also has an open-air area with historic agricultural machinery.

Radio Kootwijk offers a different perspective on history. The monumental broadcasting building Sfinx is considered a defining landmark of Kootwijk. Guided tours cover its architecture, technology and history, as well as what life was like in the former village of Radio Kootwijk; tours and dates vary. The Zandsculpturenfestival returns to Garderen each year, although dates and programme may change.

Water and Activities in Voorthuizen

At Recreatiegebied Zeumeren in Voorthuizen, there are long beaches and opportunities to relax in the water. Zeumeren is an official bathing site, where water quality is monitored seasonally; checking the latest information may help with your planning. Zeumeren Watersport offers water skiing, wakeboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. SchatEiland Zeumeren adds an indoor adventure park covering more than 5,500 square metres. The options in this recreational area range from activities on the water to a weather-independent visit indoors.
