Barneveld: Culture, Parkland and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Barneveld
Barneveld showcases cultural history and green surroundings in a variety of ways. Alongside a traditional market event, there is a museum, a parkland and two walking routes of distinctly different lengths. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Barneveld, these highlights can help you plan your activities according to your interests and preferred distance.
Cultural history at the museum and in market traditions
The Oud Veluwse Markt brings the history of the Veluwe to life through crafts, traditional costumes and music; the characteristic atmosphere of times gone by is also part of its appeal. The first edition took place in 1967. This market tradition offers a distinctive way to explore regional history, different from the exhibits in a museum.
Museum Nairac presents the history of Barneveld, from the oldest archaeological finds unearthed in the area to contemporary art and current local stories. Archaeological, artistic and present-day themes are featured side by side. You can discover different perspectives on the town, from early traces in the soil to stories from local life today.
Guided tours of the permanent collection and/or temporary exhibitions can be booked at the museum. These options offer different focuses: the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions or both. There are also various scavenger hunts for children, allowing them to actively explore the museum with their parents or grandparents. The programme thus brings together different themes and ways of visiting the museum without assuming that one approach suits everyone equally.
Architecture, parkland and walks
Kasteel de Schaffelaar is an architectural highlight. This castle-like house dates from around 1850 and is considered the Netherlands’ most important country house in the Neo-Tudor style. Here, the focus is on architectural form and history, setting this aspect of Barneveld apart from the art and local history at the museum.
Landgoed Schaffelaar offers a different highlight: a landscaped and well-maintained parkland with a distinctive avenue layout. Fourteen avenues converge there, and there are several bodies of water. The parkland is ideal for leisurely walks. The Koewei on Landgoed Schaffelaar is a large meadow surrounded by a ditch, making it a pleasant spot for a picnic, for example. The parkland, meadow, water and avenues each offer different landscape impressions.
Two walking routes, two distances
The ten-kilometre Klompenpad Het Paradijspad passes through grassland, heathland, pasture and woodland. Along the way, the route takes you through the Het Paradijs estate, among other places, and follows streams, crosses bridges and passes over a boardwalk. There is a good chance of spotting various bird species and deer along the way, although sightings are not guaranteed. The starting point is at Achterveldseweg 26 in Barneveld.
Rondje Barneveld is a signposted, 26-kilometre walking route through and along the green surroundings of Barneveld. At several decision points, you can lengthen or shorten the route. This gives you a different way to choose your distance than on Het Paradijspad: the latter is a ten-kilometre route featuring several described landscape types, while Rondje Barneveld is a longer signposted route with options to adjust the distance.
If distance is important to your choice, you can compare the ten-kilometre Het Paradijspad with the 26-kilometre Rondje Barneveld. The routes also differ in the features highlighted in their descriptions: Het Paradijspad is characterised by changing landscapes, streams and bridges, while Rondje Barneveld focuses on signposting and decision points for lengthening or shortening the route. Check the starting point and route details before setting out.
