Conselve: Churches, Villas and History
Accommodation in Conselve
Conselve is a destination for travellers interested in churches, historic villas and how a place has developed. Its architectural history spans early ecclesiastical predecessors and buildings from the 18th century. This cultural focus is complemented by the Fiera di Sant’Agostino, which held its 447th edition in 2026. You can tailor your stay to different interests: sacred art, successive phases of construction, or the time-specific setting of a local event.
Churches and sacred history
The present-day Duomo di San Lorenzo, also known as the Duomo di Conselve, stands on the remains of an old parish church dating from around 900 AD. The current building was constructed between 1720 and 1748. It was consecrated by Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico, who later became known as Pope Clement XIII. An altarpiece in the Duomo depicts the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence and dates from the early 17th century. After restoration, it was attributed to the school of Tintoretto. The site thus brings together the history of an early ecclesiastical predecessor, a later church building and a work of art whose attribution remains qualified.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista Decollato di Palù also offers its own historical timeline. It was built in 1574 at the behest of Giovanni Lazara and extensively restored in 1647, 1733 and 1968. This series of restorations shows that the building’s history did not end with its original construction. The church has step-free access on the ground floor. Check current access options before your visit.
Villas and palazzi through the ages
Villa Conti-Schiesari was built by the noble Conti family in the first half of the 16th century and extended and altered in the 17th century. The 11th-century castle of Conselve probably stood on this site. The castle attribution is probable, not certain. The villa therefore brings together an early history of the site and several later phases of construction.
Other historic buildings include Palazzo Schiesari Bergonzini, dating from the first half of the 17th century. Palazzo Ferrante Deganello was built by the Venetian noble Michiel family in the late 16th or early 17th century. It was formerly also known as Michiel, Suman, Moschini and Buniolo. Its inner façade dates from the 16th century and opens onto a large garden.
Villa Zane Bellegno was built by the Zane family and passed to the Bellegno family in 1630. Its construction is probably dated to the mid-16th century. By contrast, the present-day appearance of Villa Malipiero-Morosini-Cavalli-Cappello, now called Villa Schiesari, dates from the 18th century. Construction of Villa Ca’ Sagredo began in 1660 under Giovanni Sagredo. It was designed as a hunting lodge and later transformed by Piero Sagredo into a grand country residence. The different construction periods and former functions give the local history several clearly distinguishable points in time.
The fair and regional character
In 2026, the Fiera di Sant’Agostino held its 447th edition in Conselve. At that edition, open workshops were offered at the Villaggio Fiera, and there was also a food stand run by Pro Loco. These programme items are specific to 2026. If you want to combine your trip with the event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The regional wine designation is also part of Conselve’s character: the town lies within the production area of Bagnoli Friularo DOCG. Together with the churches, villas and palazzi, this offers a theme for a stay that brings together architectural history and regional character, without requiring any one attraction to take centre stage.
The historical dates help place the sights in time; for the event, the specific edition is what matters. Choose a hotel to suit your planned stay, and if you are travelling for the Fiera, check the dates for that year.
