If you’re looking for a hotel in Corbara, you can plan your trip around your own interests: landscapes, outdoor activities, history or wine. Lake Corbara and the Forello Gorges represent different landscape features; historical sites and the Lago di Corbara DOC designation of origin complete the picture. The following facts will help you consider these themes when planning your trip.

Lake Corbara and the Forello Gorges

Lake Corbara was created in 1962 by the construction of a dam to generate hydroelectric power. The lake’s landscape is therefore also shaped by an infrastructure project with a clearly identifiable date. Around Corbara, the Forello Gorges feature high, rugged banks reaching nearly 200 metres, karst coves and cave systems. The lake and gorges thus offer different points of interest: the history of hydropower on the one hand, and the striking banks and karst formations on the other.

Route 30 heads towards Corbara after the dam and runs directly along its base. Check road conditions before setting out.

Activities around the lake

Sport fishing takes place at Lake Corbara; canoeing is among the activities practised in the area around the lake. The two activities have different locations: sport fishing takes place directly on the lake, while canoeing is practised in its surrounding area. Local conditions may vary, so it is worth checking them before making plans.

Near Corbara, on the left bank of the Tiber and before Lake Corbara, there is an equipped climbing wall with more than 20 routes. As route conditions may change, check them before visiting.

Another route description concerns the scenic descent towards Corbara on the Anello Orvieto-Monte Peglia-Corbara-Orvieto: it is 7.6 kilometres long. Road conditions may vary here too, so check them before making plans.

Historical sites in Corbara

The 1292 land register records Corbara as a castrum belonging to the rural parish of Santa Maria da Stiolo. The Montemarte family built a large fortified villa in the settlement, which still stands today. The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea Apostolo on the Tenuta di Corbara dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. Another point of interest is the Roman port of Pagliano at the confluence of the Tiber and Paglia, which was excavated in 1889/90.

The dates refer to different events: 1292 is the year of the land register entry, the 14th to 15th centuries date the church, and 1889/90 refers to the excavation of the Roman port. This makes it possible to distinguish local history, architectural history and archaeology, rather than conflating different periods.

Wine and the Lago di Corbara DOC

Wines produced in the hills between Corbara and nearby Baschi led to the creation of the specific Lago di Corbara DOC designation of origin in 1998. The DOC includes red and white wines. The varieties include Sangiovese, Grechetto, Merlot, Pinot nero, Vermentino, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. The range therefore extends beyond a single grape variety or category of wine. If wine is one of your travel interests, the DOC offers a specific regional point of reference.

Choose a focus for your hotel search

When looking for hotels in Corbara, you can first consider which themes you want your trip to focus on: the landscape around the lake and in the gorges, outdoor activities, historical sites or the DOC’s connection with wine.
