Discover Montefranco
Accommodation in Montefranco
Montefranco brings together traditions, architectural history, and nature. An annual event provides a seasonal focal point; churches and historic buildings sit alongside landscapes and outdoor activities as further themes for your trip.
Traditions and architectural history
The Rievocazione del Passaggio di San Bernardino da Siena has been held every year in Montefranco during the third week of May since 1986. In the historic center, it depicts medieval life with recreated craft workshops and performances. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates for your travel period.
Santa Maria Assunta has medieval origins and was expanded to three naves in the 15th century. Its furnishings include a richly carved baptismal font. Three naves refer to the division of a church interior into three longitudinal sections. The Church of Madonna del Carmine houses 17th-century frescoes from the Umbrian school, as well as a 16th-century depiction of the Assumption. San Bernardino was built in 1454 over an old Benedictine oratory and preserves frescoes attributed to Orlando Merlini. The dates therefore range from medieval origins, through the specific construction date of San Bernardino, to works from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Porta Franca survives as one of Montefranco’s historic gates. It faces south toward Arrone and served as a passage for duty-free goods. The outer walls of the former Bufone Castle remain.
Landscape and outdoor activities
The municipality of Montefranco lies within the Nera River Park. At Monte Moro, archaeological and landscape features come together: the archaeological site includes the remains of a Roman sanctuary and two associated cisterns. A viewpoint overlooks the valley of the Fosso Lavatore on the northern slope toward the Via Flaminia. A route leads from Montefranco to Monte Moro. The historic Via del Ferro once connected Monteleone di Spoleto with Scheggino in the Nera Valley.
Montefranco offers opportunities for sport climbing and free climbing on equipped natural and artificial rock faces. The municipality also has caving trips among its outdoor activities. Rafting is possible in the Montefranco area within the Nera River Park; providers and conditions may vary. If you are considering rafting, check the specific conditions in advance.
For your travel period, the Rievocazione is the clear seasonal reference: it takes place every year during the third week of May, and you should check the specific dates before booking. You can choose among the other themes according to your interests: architectural history and art, or landscapes and outdoor activities. This lets you plan your trip around the focus you want.
