Alviano: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alviano
Alviano offers different themes for a trip: nature watching, trails and cultural sites each have their own focus. When looking for hotels, you can first consider which of these themes you want your trip to revolve around. The trails vary in length and layout; cultural attractions include a castle, church, chapel and museum.
Nature, birdwatching and trails
The Cammino della Pietra Bianca runs for 118 km through the Monti Amerini and the Tiber River area. Alviano is one of the 14 stages on the circular route. It can be traveled on foot, by mountain bike or in a Joëlette. The 118 km distance refers to the entire Cammino, not just the stage in Alviano.
Another option is the permanent Sentiero dell’Unicorno. This art trail has eight stops, starts in the Giardini del Sole in the oldest part of Alviano and leads to the Castello. The circular route through Parco Pietraia, Pianali, Grotta di Rancacani and Eremo San Brunone is about 14 km long. It passes through woodland between Alviano and Lugnano in Teverina. The Cammino covers 118 km in total and has 14 stages; Alviano is one of them.
The Oasi WWF di Alviano is in the Parco Fluviale del Tevere. This park spans the municipalities of Guardea, Alviano, Montecchio and Civitella d’Agliano. The Oasi is a birdwatching destination, with 250 bird species recorded there. This nature theme differs from the trails, which are described by their length, route or stops.
Castle, architecture and rural heritage
The restored Rocca di Alviano stands at the entrance to the town and gave rise to its settlement. Built in 1495, it was a square baronial residence with corner towers and defensive works. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is housed in the castle’s basement rooms. It preserves the area’s rural heritage through tools and objects from agriculture, domestic life and crafts.
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 15th century. It houses a panel by Niccolò Alunno depicting the Assumption of Mary, surrounded by glorifying angels. The Cappella delle rondini is another place with a special view: it stands at the most panoramic point in the municipality and overlooks the Teverina plain and the Alviano-Guardea nature reserve.
The Casette di Creta are also part of Alviano’s architectural history. These residential buildings date from the 19th century and are located in the area occupied by the Calanchi. They were built using simple materials found locally. Together with the Rocca and the parish church, they illustrate different aspects of the architectural heritage.
A tradition on January 5
La Vecchiarella is a tradition revived in Alviano and held every year on the afternoon or evening of January 5. Singers go from house to house collecting donations for the souls in purgatory. Its timing and customs give it a distinct place alongside the permanent trails and historic sights.
