Cesi: Churches, History and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Cesi
Cesi combines historic buildings and archaeological evidence with an area suited to a range of outdoor activities. This gives you two main themes to consider when planning your trip: local history, with its churches and fortifications, and outdoor pursuits. There is also a clearly measured section of the Cammino dei Protomartiri Francescani and the Sant’Erasmo Astronomical Observatory.
Churches, Art and Local History
The churches each highlight a different aspect of history. Sant’Angelo in Cesi is documented from the 11th century and preserves archaeological finds from the surrounding area. San Michele Arcangelo was also built in the 11th century. It stands above Cesi’s medieval town wall and partly incorporates the old bastions. The church also preserves numerous archaeological finds from the Cesi area and from Carsulae. It is currently used as an auditorium and cultural centre. If you would like to include this use in your visit, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Santa Maria Assunta houses an altarpiece from 1308, created by the “Maestro di Cesi”. Palazzo Contelori represents another side of local history: during the period when Cesi was self-governing, this 17th-century building served as the seat of the municipal administration. Thus, alongside churches and works of art, the former municipal administration and the history of its buildings are among the themes that define Cesi.
Fortifications and Traces of the Past
In the Middle Ages, Cesi was a fortified centre, with watchtowers along the mountain above the town. Cesi is also known as the “Terrace of the Terni Basin”. Further back in time, Sant’Erasmo takes you to a fortified plateau above Cesi that had been inhabited since the 5th–6th centuries BC. The contrast in periods is striking: Sant’Erasmo points to pre-Christian settlement, while the watchtowers and fortifications belong to the medieval centre.
Outdoor Activities and Trails
The Cesi area is suited to outdoor activities such as mountain biking, e-biking, trekking, climbing and paragliding. Work on the fortifications created new trails and improved existing ones. This made the sites in question accessible to visitors and available for use. Check trail conditions locally before planning your route.
The Cammino dei Protomartiri Francescani includes a 12.2-kilometre section from Cesi to Terni, with an estimated duration of four hours. Use this time estimate as a guide when planning your route.
Astronomy as Another Travel Theme
The Sant’Erasmo Astronomical Observatory is a point of reference for astronomy enthusiasts in the Terni area and beyond. If you would like to include it as a specific destination, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
