There are different points of reference when planning a trip to San Marino: its settlement history spans several periods, while trails in the Elmo–Melonta area lead to a ridge, forests, and the Chiani River. If you’re looking for a hotel in San Marino, you might consider whether historical traces or a hike should be the focus of your trip.

The History of Settano and San Marino

Settano developed during Roman times. The settlement of San Marino, by contrast, developed only from the beginning of the 19th century, following the gradual decline of Palazzo Bovarino. It was the former residence of the Counts Bovarini, also known as Bovaccini. In the area around San Marino, the reuse of Volsinian cippi from Monte Melonta points to settlement dating back to Etruscan times; some cippi were used in old buildings in the area.

The “Le vie” list also includes a route called “Palazzo Bovarino – San Marino.”

Elmo–Melonta and Its Landscape

The Elmo–Melonta natural area is considered to be of great natural history and ecological interest. The Elmo-Melonta trail runs through this area and starts just north of the bridge on the road from San Faustino to San Marino. Monte Melonta is considered one of the most scenic viewpoints on the entire Monte Peglia. The trail reaches Podere Melonta I, the ruins of a farmhouse on the ridge. From there, the panorama stretches across the surrounding forests of Elmo and Melonta; the trail also reaches the Chiani River.

Trail Distance and Walking Time

La Foresta dell’Elmo can be reached via the SP 101 and a turnoff to San Marino. The trail is 12.4 km long, with a stated walking time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. The distance and walking time offer different points of reference for planning: one describes the length of the route, while the other indicates the estimated walking effort. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out on a hike.

Fulignano and Nature Education Activities

Fulignano, near the San Marino hamlet in the municipality of San Venanzo, is set up to welcome visitors to the protected natural area and the adjoining circular trail. It is also intended to host nature education activities, with or without overnight stays. A circular trail adjoining the visitor facilities partly borders the Integral Reserve. Fulignano thus offers both a visitor welcome and nature education activities in different formats.

Festa dello Sport in August

The Festa dello Sport in San Marino is scheduled for the second-to-last Sunday in August and is organized by the GIOCO-SPORT SAN MARINO association. If you’d like to plan your trip around this date, check in advance whether and when the festival will take place in your travel year.
