At an elevation of 295 m, Poggio Aquilone sits atop a marl-limestone hill overlooking the Fersinone, a tributary of the Néstore. Its hilltop location, historical references spanning several centuries, and trails to various destinations give your travel planning different points of focus. Whether you are most interested in the scenery, the village’s history, or the local festival, Poggio Aquilone offers plenty to explore.

Scenery, Getting There and Trails

You can reach Poggio Aquilone from nearby Marsciano or via a steeply ascending road that branches off the road to San Venanzo. If you choose the second route, bear the incline in mind and check road conditions before setting out.

The Poggio Aquilone–Civitella dei Conti route follows an old trail towards the Fersinone Valley, with views of both the valley and Poggio Aquilone. A route between San Venanzo and Poggio Aquilone recorded in the Gregorian Cadastre follows the Torrente Fersinone valley before climbing up to the village. The Poggio Aquilone–Marsciano route descends from the old borgo, passes Podere Foiano and Podere Terre Molino, and heads towards a watercourse. The routes differ in their destinations and courses: the connection to Civitella follows the old trail and offers views of the valley and village; the route from San Venanzo recorded in the cadastre follows the valley before climbing up to the village; and the route towards Marsciano descends from the old borgo.

History of the Village and Its Surroundings

In the 13th century, Castel del Poggio de l’Aquilone was connected with the Cadolingi counts of Marsciano. In 1312, Henry VII of Luxembourg was hosted in Poggio Aquilone. The Statute of Poggio Aquilone was drawn up in 1442 and comprised 109 articles regulating the small community. A cadastre compiled around 1500 lists the parish of Sant'Egidio in Poggio Aquilone. The timeline spans from the 13th century to around 1500, shifting from feudal connections to the regulation of the community and the parish.

A Copper Age and Stone Age burial was discovered near Poggio Aquilone in 1898. The flint and copper objects found there are now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna. This discovery extends the history of the area beyond the village’s medieval connections.

Festival and Patron Saint Celebrations

Poggio Aquilone is associated with a festival of handmade Umbricelli, held during the last week of May and the first week of June. The patron saint celebrations for S. Pasquale Baylon, also associated with the village, take place during the same period.
